Flurry of goals results in Sabres first win

The St. Anthony’s Sabres senior girls soccer team broke their scoring drought with a flurry of goals in last Thursday’s victory over Strathmore.

The Sabres hosted Strathmore High School in league play, and peppered the opposing team’s net all game. In the end, they won 4-2. These were the first goals the team scored this season, and resulted in their first win.
Because of this, the Sabres will not finish in last place in the league and have a chance at gaining a playoff game on their home field.
“We knew we were better,” said coach Gavin Makse going into the game.
Coach Makse said the team has been concentrating on fine-tuning, timing and simplifying their game. This has helped them move the ball and be in better position for scoring opportunities.
Brittany Stahl scored first with a left foot strike, and then Maddie Davis headed a cross into the net. The Sabres led 2-nil at the half. Lucy Deitzer  also added to the total, but Strathmore was able to answer back with two goals. Late in the half, Emilie Toews had a free kick and Deitzer connected to put in her second of the game.
This week playoffs are underway, and Makse says anything can happen.
“Now that we have the confidence that we can score, we can win,” said Makse.
