Drumheller Institution locked down following assault

At approximately 19:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013, an offender was found to have been assaulted at Drumheller Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary. Correctional Officers immediately responded and assessed his condition. The offender was transported by ambulance to an outside hospital for further assessment and treatment. The extent of the injuries is unknown at this time.

The RCMP and the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are investigating the incident. The Institution is on a lockdown and will re-open when management determines it is safe to do so.

No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, CSC will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
