Anti-violence website launch aims to help victims find way out

Big Country Anti-Violence Association recently celebrated the launch of their website with the hopes it will allow those dealing with violence to find help anonymously and with proper guidance.

“There is that stigma people feel when suffering from violence,” says the association president JoAnne Zebedee, “when people tell them they appear to come from a good family but in (the victim’s) heart they know it’s not right.”
The site, www.bcava.com, allows visitors to contact support, keep up on events like the bi-annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, and find resources on a number of different issues victims of violence may be forced to deal with.
“We want people to know there is this support and want people to start looking for it,” says Zebedee.
The nature of family violence, such as abusive relationships, often causes the victim to feel ashamed and reluctant to seek help. With a website like this, says Zebedee, it allows those victims to find help without having to talk face-to-face with someone, retaining anonymity.
“It’s hard to make the necessary changes. This website will allow people dealing with different experiences to find something or share something with others.”
Some of the Big Country Anti-Violence Association’s most well known events, like Walk a Mile in Her Shoes and the Red Rose Campaign, are also featured on the website.
Also, information on how to join the committee is available.
BCAVA is an educational and awareness organization, and does not deal with victims of violence, but can guide them to proper help and organizations. They also bring guest speakers into the valley for seminars.
“It’s a safe way to find out what we do, how we do it, and who we do it for,” says Zebedee.
“Violence is something which seems to be a problem that’s not going away, and this website was a long time coming.”
Check out www.bcava.com for more information on the group and upcoming events, and Zebedee asks that those who are dealing with violence or know someone who is to pass along this new resource.
