IMCA racers to hit track Canada Day

Racing returns this weekend to Dinosaur Downs as the IMCA will be hosting the first races of the season in Drumheller.

This Friday and Saturday dust and smoke will be blowing and four-wheeled racers will be flying around the 3/8-mile oval track. Mike Hansen of the Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society says the races are just one more way residents and visitors can celebrate the Canada Day holiday.
“On July 1, we put it in the afternoon, so people can go to the parade, come up and watch some races, and be out of there in time to go downtown for the Canada Day events,” said Hansen.
On Friday, gates open at 12 noon, and races start at 1 p.m. On Saturday, they are doing an evening show with gates opening at 6 p.m., and races starting at 7 p.m.
The races include IMCA modifieds, which are open front wheeled, but have a stock car body, IMCA stock cars and truck classes.
“It will be pretty entertaining,” said Hansen. “It will be nice to get a show off.”
He said they expect a field of 12-16 IMCA modified racers and about 10-12 IMCA stock cars. He adds the interest in the trucks is spreading throughout drivers.
“With the trucks, last time they were here we had about 10 of them, but it sounds like there might be more coming this time,” said Hansen.
The Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society is hoping to stage two more races this season in August and September.
