Senior girls Sabres heading to zones

The St. Anthony’s senior girls basketball team is headed to zones this weekend and is hoping for a strong showing.

This season the team has shown constant improvement, and has been playing strong competition within the Golden Hills League.
The team’s short bench has been troublesome lately.
“It seems that as our skills increase, our team size decreases. We have had some struggles lately due to illness and have played many games with just five players,” said coach Chloe Grant.
The team has brought up some junior players to fill in the gaps. However at times they have not been able to have any substitutes to put on the floor. Last week they were in a close game with Three Hills when fatigue set in, and by the end, with foul trouble, they were not able to put a full five players on the court.
“With the size of our team, it is hard to keep momentum going when nobody gets a break or when players have to hold back because we can’t afford to lose anyone to foul,” Grant said.
The team is hoping to bring some momentum into the zone tournament this weekend in Bassano. On Monday night, they had a convincing win over Morrin School.
In the first round on Friday they are face Trochu, a team they have seen in league play.
“It should be interesting because we haven’t played them in quite some time,” she said.
“I feel confident that my team is going to head into zones and do the very best they can, and hopefully I will be bringing my whole team. I know my girls can put up a fight, and at this point, I just hope they can mentally push through the exhaustion and play with everything they’ve got! If we can do that, then we should be able to do quite well.”
