Sabres top Three Hills, prepare for home tourney

The St. Anthony’s Sabres have only two more league games before the season ends, and are hoping to have a strong finish to the year that will result in a good showing at zones, and possibly a provincial appearance.

Last season the Sabres made it to the provincial tournament, but did not advance through the draw. Getting to provincials may be a tougher job this season with stiffer competition at the zone level.
The team’s most recent success came at the hands of Three Hills. The Sabres hosted Three Hills on February 16 and the Sabres came out on the defensive. They managed to hold Three Hills to just one basket in the first quarter, and locked them off the scoreboard in the third quarter as they cruised to a 67-25 victory.
The whole team was on the scoreboard. Brandon Gruber contributed 26 points seven steals, 18 rebounds and four blocks. Matt Russell contributed 16 points as well as five steals and four assists.
The Sabres will meet Three Hills again before the season is through for a make-up game. They will also be heading to DVSS to play on Monday, February 28.
Before that, they are hosting a five team home tournament on Saturday, February 26. The team has invited Cremona, Castor, Youngstown and Livingstone, which is ranked number one at the 1A level.
The team is hoping these games will prepare them for zones in Rosemary. This year the team has extra competition to get to provincials. Acme School competed last season at the 2A level. Because of declining school numbers, they are playing at the 1A level and are currently ranked second in the province.  The Redmen won both meetings with the Sabres this season.
