Alumni Sabres take on new crop tonight

There are pages of sports stats comparing players from generation to generation. In fact part of the pastime of sports is arguing as to who was the best ever; Gretzky versus Crosby, Jordan versus Kobe, versus Lebron. How do the modern sluggers stack up to the ‘Babe’ or ‘Joltin Joe?’

The 2010-2011 edition of the St Anthony’s Sabres basketball team have a chance to see how they stack up to previous teams at the first of what is hoped to become an annual event.
The senior boys and girls Sabres will be playing in the St. Anthony’s Sabres Alumni Game. The girls take the court at 5 p.m. and the boys at about 7 p.m. The teams have invited former players back to play in the match.
According to Gavin Makse, because the school has been only offering high school for the last few years, it is only now possible to stage the game.
Many of the former Sabres have also excelled, including Jason Aiken who went on to play at Lakeland College, and Jasmine Mraz who played at the post secondary level at Olds College. Other notable all stars that may come include Mike Benci, Dave Ewing, Matt Mohan, Darci Paarup and Dusti Chayer.
Makse said there is great interest from the alumni players coming back to play. He also said it is a valuable game for the current roster to play heading into the Christmas season.
“It not only gives them a game heading into the holidays, but it gives them a chance to play against people with experience and learn,” he said. “It is also a chance to mingle and hear from our former players on what it is to be a Sabre… we are family here of St. Anthony’s Sabres and we are always working together.”
Other former players that are interested in hitting the court against this year’s team can come on Wednesday night. Please wear a dark colour.
“In the end we are all out there just for fun,” said Makse.
