Senior Sabres girls volleyballers advance to zones

The St. Anthony’s Sabres girl’s volleyball team won a berth in the Provincial Zone high school playoffs next weekend, with a resounding victory in the consolation final at the Regional playdowns in Duchess on Saturday, November 13.      After capturing third place in round-robin play, the Sabres were pitted against the first-place tournament hosts from Pool B. Having not seen them play this year, and going with a call-up from junior high, the girls went through the match in convincing fashion, by playing a great mix of offence and defensive ball.
That triumph advanced them to the semi-finals against Rosemary, but unfortunately, their hard-hitting team took the match in two games.
This set the stage for the consolation final against Morrin, whom the girls have seen quite a bit of this fall. Playing with renewed energy, the girls won with a gutsy performance, chalking up scores of 25-18 and 25-17, on the heels of great court coverage, blocking at the net, near perfect serving and an excellent attack.
Coach Heather Colberg was thrilled with their heroic efforts, and said of her team's success, “The team already took their play to the next level by beating Hanna, and even securing a spot at regionals. Now, this weekend, they came up against older and even more skilled and experienced teams, and still took them out...the dedication and commitment these girls have shown in practice is really showing up when it counts - at these tournaments, where competition is really stiff."
Next weekend the girls travel to Zones in Bassano, and will be looking to improve on an already impressive season, and hopefully advance to Provincials.
