Provincial ball tourney sees Young Guns take division third

Blessed with beautiful weather, Drumheller’s Young Guns pee-wee softball team took a tough loss on the Newcastle diamonds this weekend.
The “rookie” team finished third in their division at the Western GM Pee-Wee ‘D’ Provincials held in town Friday to Sunday.

“We came up a little short,” in reaching their goal of making Sunday finals says head coach Shari Fournier.
“The girls knew it was going to be tough, but there were some great moments and they definitely did us proud.”
Taking two wins at the start Friday against Airdrie and Czar, the girls took a loss Saturday morning against Innisfail.
Made up of players with little experience, the pee-wees put up a back and forth game before running out of time against Coronation, landing them a third in their division.
“We hit well, defense was strong, and we had good pitching,” says Fournier. “We did all we could but we ran out of the hour and a half time limit.”
The coach says she is very impressed with the skill the teens displayed.
Provost’s team, the Shooters, took home provincial gold.
With a mean age of 13, only 4 girls will be on next year’s team; the rest are moving on to the bantam class.
“Most of these girls have been together for four years, it will be bittersweet for them.”
The Young Guns are looking forward to next year, new players mean new opportunity to develop the ballers into a stronger team.
