St. Anthony’s Junior high basketball teams sweep championship night

The St. Anthony’s Saints junior high basketball teams were victorious making a clean sweep of championship night last week in Hanna.
Both the boys and girls teams were in action on Thursday ,February 25.
The boy’s team was in tough according to coach Jay Mulgrew, as he displays the championship night trophy. The hardware is emblazoned with a score of plaques won by Hanna in previous seasons. This year was St. Anthony’s turn.
The boys battled to a 28-26 victory. The top scorers were Tanner Borowicz and Brian Kosolofski, who each scored eight points.
Mulgrew said it was an exciting year for the team that learned and grew throughout the season.
“It was a high note, especially because it was the first time we beat Hanna all year,” said Mulgrew.
The girls were also in tough competition as they faced their rivals to the east.  Foul trouble has its effect on the short bench, and the team ended up playing with only four players on the court through the last 40 seconds. Despite this, they pulled out a 41-40 victory.
This was not the end for the junior high girls Saints, as they headed to a tournament, and proved to Hanna their win wasn’t a fluke.
The team played Acme in their first game, but lost. This put them up against Broxton Park of Spruce Grove. The Saints were victorious putting them in the B final versus Hanna.
History repeated itself as the girls were again marred by foul trouble. This time they played a full 2:30 with only four players, but were still able to win 53-42.
Coach Kari-Ann Faubion said this season the team learned much about the game of basketball.
“From their first game up to now, there have been huge improvements,” said Faubion.
The team has a strong returning core next year as well.
Despite beating Hanna back to back, they didn’t win when it counted. Because Hanna won two league games versus the Saints, the St. Anthony’s team will not be heading to zones.
