Carbon Raiders nab second banner

The Carbon Jr. High Girls won their second Zone banner for the 2011/2012 school year.
Earlier this fall, the same group of girls won the Zone banner in volleyball. This past weekend saw the Carbon Raiders girl’s basketball team attend 1J Zones at Menno Simons Christian School in SW Calgary.

The Raiders had an unbelievable year with 24 wins and 3 losses going into Zones.  The team entered 5 tournaments, starting off at Olds High school where they placed second losing by 5 to Crowther Memorial Jr. High School from Strathmore. Then to Holy Cross Collegiate in Strathmore where, once again, placed second to Strathmore Jr. High.  The team then entered the Bassano and Morrin tournaments winning gold at both. In league play the team won all 10 games.  To get ready for Zones, the team entered the Crowther Memorial Jr. High tournament in Strathmore. Once again they came up against the home team in the final.  The girls played hard but unfortunately had to settle with silver.
The Raiders’ first game in the Zones was against Calgary Waldorf which they won 48 -17.  The semi-final was a much tougher game against Olds Koinonia with the Raiders winning 35 – 30 sending them to the final against the host team Menno Simons.  The girls came out strong with a lead and held it the whole way through the game even though they got into some foul trouble in the fourth quarter.  The final score for the zone banner was 52 – 31.
The last zone basketball banner to be won by the Carbon Raiders girl’s team was in 2002.
