Two Drumheller hockey players weren’t exactly burning up the ice, rather melting the blacktop as each of their teams won the Hockey Night In Canada Play On! Calgary Street hockey competition.

Jared Potter and Trent Ouellette both went to the competition on June 18 and 19 at Deerfoot Mall in Calgary. The tournament is a four-on-four format with seeding rounds on Saturday and the playoffs on Sunday. It was played out on 39 rinks.
Potter played in the Under 17 “Enforcers” category. His team, the Prairie Dawgs cruised through the field of 24 teams to beat out Team Canada and win the division with a score of 10-9.
Ouellette played in the Under 19 category, and he and his squad on Team Summer beat out the Care Bears with a score of 10-7.
Don’t let the name fool you, Ouellette said the competition was strong, and there was a high calibre of players in the tournament. One of his teammates is slated to go in the first round of the NHL Draft.
This was not the only competition as there were tournaments in 17 other Canadian cities. It is billed as Canada’s largest sports festival.
The championship came down to bragging rights, although every entry receives a stick, and the winning team won some gift certificates and t-shirts.
The first Play On! tournament was held in 2003 and since then more than a half million players have participated.
This is not expected to be the pinnacle of either Potter’s or Ouellette’s careers. Ouellette will be returning to play his second season for the Regina Pats, and Jared is in contention for a spot on the Lethbridge Hurricanes next season.
