Fiddle show fun for all ages

The Scott Woods Show - Swingin’ Fiddles is making its way across Canada and will be stopping at the Stampede Barn on May 24.
Multiple winner of the Canadian Open and Grand Masters Fiddle Contests, Woods and his band bring alive the music of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s in this two hour uplifting old time show.
Woods hails from Fergus Ontario and is a sixth generation fiddler.  He was the musical director and played the part of Don Messer in Memories of Don Messer’s Jubilee that toured extensively throughout Canada for eight years.  He now travels across the country continuing his own family tradition of old time music started by his father & The Merv Woods Orchestra back in 1950.  Scott’s mother Carolyn still plays piano and travels with the band today.
Swingin’ Fiddles features not one, not two but three fiddlers playing together in harmony.   Western swing, big band, pop standards, country, gospel and plenty of old time fiddling pack the program.  Sensational step dancing, home spun family humour and of course Scott’s famous trick fiddling that earned him the Canadian Novelty Fiddle Championship title and ‘The Flippin’ Fiddler’ nickname make this a show you don’t want to miss!
The show in Drumheller is on Friday, May 24, 7pm at The Stampede Barn at Dinosaur Downs.  Tickets are only $20 for adults, $10 for kids age 6-12, kids 5 & under get in FREE.  Advance tickets on sale now at Gus’s Corner Restaurant in Drumheller or call toll free 1-855-726-8896 to charge. Route unveiled for Tour of Alberta race

The Tour of Alberta, the first professional cycling race held in Alberta on this scale, is set to start rolling in a few short months. On May 3, the official routes were released for the tour.
The Drumheller area has been a part of the tour since the race officially announced the host communities on March 5.
During stage 3, racers, of which it is expected there will be 120, will travel from Strathmore to Drumheller, through some of the most scenic prairie terrain the area has to offer.
The racers first travel north on Highway 817, then head west on Highway 564. Once they hit the turnoff to Rosebud, they head through the rolling hills, through Rosebud, and then head east down Highway 9 to Drumheller.
However, the stage doesn’t end there.
Racers pass through town and then must make the grueling ascent up the north hill of the Valley on Highway 9/56. From there, they head to the Morrin corner and turn west. Their legs will be tested again when they have to enter the Valley at the Morrin Bridge and climb their way out again. Afterwards, the racers will take a scenic ride through Highways 837 and 575.
The stage finishes off at the World’s Largest Dinosaur. The Town of Drumheller will get double exposure as racers pass through and then finish in town.
In total, stage three of the race is one of the longest legs of the Tour of Alberta at 169 kilometres.
The race is scheduled to run from September 3 to 8, with the Drumheller stage on September 6.
Anyone wishing to volunteer for the race is encouraged to contact Paul Salvatore, Director of Community Services, Town of Drumheller, at 403-823-1316.

Bike trek opportunity for Duke of Edinburgh candidates

Drumheller students working their way towards completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award program have a unique opportunity to fill one of the requirements, and it comes on two wheels.
Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins alerted inSide Drumheller to an opportunity for students to sign on to an eight-day bike trek from Drumheller to Banff.
“This is an excellent opportunity for students involved in the Duke of Edinburgh award to fulfill the expectations for all levels of the adventurous journey requirement.  Preference will be given, but not limited to, those students enrolled in this program,” said Hopkins.

The trek is offered by Two Wheel View and has spaces for nine students and three chaperones for the eight-day ride. This is for students over the age of 14 and is scheduled for August 20 to 27. Hopkins explains it is more than simply a trip.
“Students will cultivate their leadership skills by taking part in daily trip planning; engaging with the local community in fund raising activities; and raising their levels of environmental and social awareness,” he said.
There will be an information session on the opportunity on Monday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Badlands Community Facility.
