Volunteers help fill sand bags

Volunteers at the IGA parking lot showed the true spirit of Drumheller.

Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, dozens of residents began to stop by the IGA parking lot to help the Town fill much needed sand bags.

"It needs to get done. Everybody chipping in makes for a better Drumheller," said volunteer Keith Hudson.

Even Drumheller's youngest were there, shovels and bags in hand.

"I'm helping, because my house is right on the an acreage by the river, so we need sand bags. Other people should come down and help too, because other people need help with their houses," said Cort Castonguay.

Sand bag filling continues and anyone wishing to help should stop by the IGA parking lot. Sand bags will be made available to those who need them in the Canadian Tire parking lot later today.

Town Increases Flood Preparations

DRUMHELLER, June 22, 2013 – 9:05am

After Mayor Yemen declared a local state of emergency at 6:45 a.m., the Town has been working diligently on plans to handle expected flooding including the re-evaluation of evacuation plans and the establishment of an Emergency Reception Centre at the Drumheller Co-op Mall.

The Town of Drumheller is bracing for a 1 in 100 Flood event and efforts to curtail major damage to the community will continue to be ramped-up today. Alberta Environment’s latest projections call for peak flow rates of 1,370 m3/s. Town of Drumheller staff and emergency services personnel have been redeployed to areas requiring the most attention at this time.

A sandbagging location has been identified as the south east corner of the IGA parking lot. Volunteers are invited to assist starting at 10am.

The revised timeline for the crest of the river is expected during the day on Sunday, June 23, 2013.

The Gordon Taylor Bridge as of 8:45 a.m. on June 22. The river continues to rise, with flow rates at 400 cubic metres per second measured at 6 a.m. on June 22. Drumheller is currently bracing for rates of 1,370 cubic metres per second.
