Back to School in Morrin

Students at Morrin School are heading into the 2024 school year in a brand new school with brand new leadership.
Back to school is on August 28 for students at Morrin School. For decades Don Yavis was at the busses greeting students on their way in. This year Principal Rebecca Webster will be taking that role.
“The best thing about the first day of school is the opportunities and possibilities it presents,” said Webster. “It’s a fresh start for everyone, and school staff and students have 10 months ahead of them to work together and make the most of it, whether that be academically, socially, in their extracurriculars, etc.”
She looks forward to working in the new school.
“I have always had great respect for Don Yavis, and the staff at Morrin School. I sat around the Prairie Land principal’s table with Don for 8 years as Prairie Land’s Principal of Colony Schools, and I was always impressed with Morrin’s school culture, their focus on student success, and the close community. I am so excited to be a part of all of that,” said Webster
Morrin School is in a healthy position with an enrollment of about 115 students. This is up slightly from the previous year.
“We hope to see that trend continue. We are still accepting student registrations for the new school year, and parents/guardians can always contact the school for a tour or more information about all that Morrin School has to offer,” she said.
The school welcomes Mr. David Schnetkamp. He comes from Edmonton where he has been substituting for a couple of years. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary and has a background in music. He will be the school’s primary High School science specialist but will also teach junior high and high school Drama.
Former Greentree School teacher Mrs. Sharon Walker will also be joining the staff at Morrin School this fall and will be teaching Grades 5-6 for the first semester. She will be filling in for Mrs. Nelson until the end of January.
With the new school comes new possibilities.
“This year should prove to be very exciting; we have a brand new school building, and with the completion of the Hub (scheduled for December 2024) students will have access to a new Arts and Science lab, Prairie Land’s largest Shop, as well as a brand new Fitness room and batting cage,” said Webster. “I want to take full advantage of these spaces and offer more experiences to students, especially increased Arts, and Career & Technology/Trades programming. On top of that, we will offer a baseball option to junior high students in the second semester, and we hope to bring that to High School eventually as well.”


Rock Band offered at Delia School

Delia School has new leadership as it heads into the 2024-25 school year.
Mr. Blair Raugust has been appointed Principal of Delia School. Mr Ryan Duckworth who had been at Delia since 2018, has accepted the position of Vice Principal at J.C. Charyk.
Raugust is excited about the new school year.
“The best thing about the first day is seeing the excitement of the students ready to tackle a new school year. Everyone reuniting after two months away. The value of the relationships forged at small schools is unmatched,” he said.
They have brought on a new staff member and didn’t have to look far. Teddy Brinkman grew up in the Delia area and spent a year teaching Kindergarten at Delia after graduating from the University of Lethbridge. He also taught at Cessford and then Coalhurst.
“Teddy brings a wealth of talents to Delia School. He will be heading up our math department but also is musical and will be offering a rock band class as well. The community of Delia is thrilled to have Teddy back!,” said Raugust.
Raugust said the school is looking at some new programs including instrumental band, rock band, and German language and culture.
The rock band class comes from an authentic place as Brinkman for years has played guitar for the band Suit Jacket Society.
Raugust says the school has a steady enrollment.
“We had a couple of big grad classes in 2023 and 2024 which caused our numbers to dip but we are sitting around 145 students which is strong,” he said.
Back to school for Delia school is on August 28.

Back to school at DVSS

Dana Yemen

Back to school at DVSS is September 3, and there is new leadership at the school.
Dana Yemen was appointed principal at DVSS as Curtis LaPierre retired after 35 years of teaching and 14 years as principal.
“I am really honoured to be taking on this new role, and to be the first female Administrator here,” said Yemen. “Having been at Drumheller Valley Secondary School since the 2018-2019 school year as one of our Associate Principals, I have loved being a part of our school community and our amazing team, who I could not do this job without. Our staff and students are the best! The support from our community is amazing and I am proud to be a part of it.”
Yemen said the registration appears to be consistent with last year. While they don’t have any new staff at the school they are welcoming Dana Levesque back to the school. She taught at DVSS starting in 2018, but moved to Greentree School. She returns in a leadership role.
“She is now returning to join Mr. Brad Teske, as our other Associate Principal. She has strong connections herself within the community and was Greentree Elementary’s Associate Principal prior to re-joining us for this upcoming year,” said Yemen.
Program-wise, Yemen says they are looking at increasing numeracy time for the Junior High classes.
“We are also looking ahead to creating more opportunities for connections within our school community and our focus continues to be on belonging. We have done recent professional development as a staff with Dr. David Tranter’s work and “The Third Path”. We will still have our wide range of live taught core courses, our many options classes for students, and our Division’s Powerful Learning focus for the coming school year,” she said.
Yemen is looking forward to the energy that comes with a new school year.
“We can’t wait to see all our students and welcome them, whether they are returning from summer holidays or are new to our school and their journey with us is just beginning.”
