Drumheller Centennial plans underway

On Wednesday, August 22, the Drumheller Centennial Committee met to discuss plans for the celebration of the 100th birthday of the town.

Still in the very early stages of the planning process, Councillor Sharel Shoff, who is on the committee, said it won’t be long until the event will start to take shape.

“To start, we are going to have a Centennial calendar. It will hopefully be available later this fall,” said Shoff.

The calendar will include various photos and events sent in by the public.

Then on New Year’s Eve, a family dance will be held at the Badlands Community Facility to kick off the Centennial year.

“We call it a family dance because there will be something for all ages,” said Councillor Shoff.

The dance will feature a buffet style dinner, a variety of activities for children to take part in the field house and the dance will be held upstairs for the adults.

As for the actual day of incorporation, which is May 15, 2013, Shoff said they are looking at doing another dinner celebration.

A Centennial logo is also being finalized said Shoff. Banners displaying the chosen logo will hopefully begin to be displayed around town, following the Town’s  Christmas lights being removed after the holiday season.

The Drumheller Mail asked a few local residents, “what would you like to see for Drumheller’s Centennial?” and here were some of their answers:

“I would like to see a ridiculously awesome fireworks display and some historical points throughout town. Something to let people know who shaped our town, both then and now,” said Marina Flater.

“A huge, fully licensed block party would be great,” said Josh Kluck.

“Lots of fireworks, a parade, and definitely Drumheller’s history incorporated somehow,” said Madison Daly.

“A big community, family dance would be fun. Maybe a barbecue sort of thing,” said Tara Semchuk.

“Definitely a parade to gather people and maybe a display of historical highlights including pictures and articles,” said Darlene Shannon.
