Heavy rainfall poses no flooding risk

The Town of Drumheller is in communication with operators at the Dickson Dam and at this point, while the river is higher than residents normally see it, there is no risk of flooding.

Drumheller’s director of Disaster Services Ray Romanetz and deputy director of Disaster Services Bill Bachynski confirmed that the Dickson Dam is releasing at 160 cubic metres per second and has no plans of increasing flows as the majority of snow pack has melted and is not expected to cause any problems.

“The snow pack is gone and the dam is not full, so we are in good shape here,” said Bachynski.

The dam is presently 78 per cent full and the current flow at Drumheller is 265 cubic metres per second.

“Rains received over the last several days has not resulted in any concerns regarding flows on the Red Deer River,” said a press release. “If the situation changes as a result of significant rainfall, River Forecasting will advise the Town accordingly.”
