Countdown begins for Drumheller centennial

Tuesday, May 15, is a big day for Drumheller, it will be 99 years to the day since Drumheller was incorporated as a village.

The countdown has begun for Drumheller’s 100 years of “Something to roar about.” It will be less than a year away until Drumheller celebrates it’s centennial.

The Drumheller Centennial Committee is hoping to get residents thinking about the centennial now.

“We’re trying to make people aware that the 15th of May is the actual date of the centennial,” said committee member, Councillor Sharel Shoff.

The committee has events in the planning stages and is putting together a centennial calendar. The calendar will feature photos from Drumheller’s history and events throughout the community.

The calendar will be sold in October, but to get it ready, the committee is asking residents to donate photos. The photos will be made into a collage. Residents can post photos on the Drumheller Centennial Facebook page or to committe member Roxanne Clarke at r.clarke@drumhellerchamber.com.

Groups are also being asked to get their events for 2013 on the centennial calender.

“If groups, service clubs, school, or whoever has an event in 2013, we’d like to have it on the calendar,” said Shoff.

The events do not necessarily have to be a part of the centennial celebrations. For example, if a group has a pancake breakfast, that could be on the calendar.

The committee is planning it’s own events, kicking off the centennial on New Year's Eve. Other major events will be held on Canada Day and, of course, May 15.

Residents wishing to learn more about the centennial or wish to become involved are encouraged to visit the Drumheller Centennial Facebook page or the Town of Drumheller’s website www.dinosaurvalley.com.

Residents can also contact Shoff at 403-820-1644 or Paul Salvatore at 403-823-1316.

Committee meetings are held the third Wednesday every month at noon.

“If people want to get involved or have an idea, come to our meetings. We’re more than open to suggestions,” said Shoff. “The more people that get involved, the better it will be.”
