DVSS helping students make the jump into junior high

Drumheller Valley Secondary School is welcoming students making the leap from Grade 6 to 7, or students planning on attending DVSS, and their families to come and check out what the school has to offer and put their minds at ease.

On Thursday, April 26, at 7:00 p.m. DVSS will be hosting a transition night to help new students, Grade 7 or otherwise, and their parents make the transition to junior high and DVSS.

After completing Grade 6, students, many of whom have only attended one school up to this point, must change schools to continue their education.

New Grade 7’s are thrust into a new environment, complete with more numerous and older students.

Curtis Lapierre, principal of DVSS, points out, however, the transition can sometimes be more difficult for parents.

“Their child is changing, is now going to a junior/senior high school. There’s fear about what their child will be exposed to,” said Lapierre. “Parents can feel more distant in their child’s education as opposed to the connectedness in elementary school. They will begin to see changes in their child, hormonal and attitude changes.”

During the evening, Lapierre will go through what students and parents can expect in their first year of junior high, the first day, the available options, programming, and will finish off with a tour of the school.

Sixty one new Grade 7 students are expected to attend DVSS in the 2012/2013 school year.

For more information about the transition night, call DVSS at 403-823-5171.

“We try to ease the transition for Grade 6’s into Grade 7 for kids and their parents,” said Lapierre. “It’s one of those big times in their lives.”
