Who are you? Sherry Gouy

Name: Sherry Gouy

Job: Senior Associate

Employer: 7-11

What do you like about your job? All the people that you get to meet, and the tourists with their stories.  It is just a good place to be around - everybody there is happy.

How long have you lived here? We used to live in Olds, and moved to Drumheller in 1989 but we have had a farm in Carbon since 1973.

What brought you to Drumheller? The kids' schooling.

What do you like best about Drumheller? The people - they are always willing to help you out any way they can. I lost my daughter through a car accident and the whole community in the valley and in Carbon were so caring and helped any way they could.

If there were one thing you could change about Drumheller, what would it be? We need a Tim Horton’s!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? It’d have to be somewhere nice and warm.

Have you ever taken a life-changing decision? My husband and I had to take the decision to shut off our daughter’s life support machine. I hope to never have to make that decision again.

What do you do in your spare time? I like to read and look after my house.

Your life’s best achievement? My kids.

What are your strengths? I am a perfectionist, so I like things to be done right.

Any weaknesses? I am perfectionist, so I get stressed easily if things aren’t done properly!

Three words that best describe you? Caring, helpful and perfectionist!

What makes you happy? When everything is going right and you know your kids are safe and the family is happy.

If you were granted three wishes from an angel or genie, what would they be? No more drunk drivers on the road, to bring my daughter back and to have unlimited wishes!

If you could have one super power what would it be? To find a fountain  of youth.

If you could travel back in time and meet yourself as a 10 year-old kid, what advice would you give yourself?  To stay strong.

Words to live by? Do what makes you happy!

Who are you? Melissa Lindsay Van Mil

Name: Melissa Lindsay Van Mil.

Age: 20.

Job: Cashier.

Employer: Drumheller Co-op.

What do you like about your job? I like to get to see all the customers, and get to know the residents of Drumheller.

How long have you lived here? Six months.

Where do you come from and what brought you to Drumheller? I lived in Airdrie for four years, I came to Drumheller for work and to be with my mom.

What do you like best about Drumheller? The easygoing atmosphere, it is so laid back here, it’s nice!

If there were one thing you could change about Drumheller, what would it be? Give it a Tim Horton’s!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? I think I would live somewhere tropical, like the Dominicans, or the nicer parts of Mexico.

Have you ever taken a life-changing decision? Moving to Drumheller, I used to live with my dad so it was a big change for me, coming to a small town.

What do you do in your spare time? I like to read and write,  I am working on a novel right now, a mixture of Harry Potter and Twilight, but better! I also like to hang out with my friends, and watch movies, I love movies.

Your life’s best achievement? So far it’s graduating. When I finish writing my novel, I’ll try to go back to school, to study to be a drama teacher.

What are your strengths? I am a really easy going person so it takes a lot to upset me, I can take everything with a grain of salt.

Any weaknesses? I am too nice for my own good.

Any bad habits? I am addicted to Spitz (sunflower seeds), but the green bag ones only. I can go through a bag in two or three days.

Three words that best describe you? Enthusiastic, easy-going and caring.

What makes you happy? When I hang out with my best friend, Melissa. Or when I write a really awesome scene in my novel.

If you were granted three wishes from an angel or genie, what would they be? I would really love to have a big house with a horse, my parents to get along and to go on a really long vacation with all my friends.

If you could have one super power what would it be? I’d like  to be able to control fire, and if I could have my way, it would be purple!

If you could travel back in time and meet yourself as a 10 year old kid, what advice would you give yourself? Pay attention in school and homework is a good thing!

Words to live by? “Love is the only war worth dying for” - Ville Valo (lead singer of HIM)

Who are you? Terry Ruth

Name: Terry Ruth.

What age are you? Currently I’m living in the Holocene-Quaternary Age, in the Cenozoic Era. It’s one of my favorites.

Job: Day job: shop instructor up at the Pen. Weekends: musician/DJ/Karaoke host!

What do you like about your job? It’s truly amazing seeing inmate students gradually acquire confidence, gain self-esteem, take pride in their achievements, and most of all, begin to realize that their ability to do these things in one area can realistically transfer to other pursuits in their lives. Many of these particular guys have never succeeded at anything academic, and it’s a privilege to be able to witness them doing so for the first time. Plus I have a really cool desk.

What do you like best about Drumheller? By far it’s the people who live here, and the fine circle of friends I’ve somehow managed to acquire!  And there are wonderful opportunities for playing music here, as well.

If there were one thing you could change about Drumheller, what would it be? I love so many things about it here. But I’m puzzled by the annoyance some residents seem to express towards the tourists that choose our town as a destination; tourism contributes in a huge way to our local economy and to our unique Drumheller identity...as far as I can see, their presence here is a wonderful asset.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?  You mean aside from Drumheller? Nowhere, unless I could take my friends with me.

Have you ever taken a life changing decision? Yes. To decide to ask a friend for guitar lessons when I was 19.

What do you do in your spare time? Spare time? What’s that?

Your life’s best achievement? Hmmm...I guess a highlight would be having one of my portrait drawings, of Albert Einstein, reproduced 9 feet tall on a wall of the Albert Einstein Memorial Museum in Austria, years ago.

What are your strengths? I’m blessed with the dual gifts of persistent optimism and unbounded curiosity.

Any weaknesses? I’m kind of an emotional softie...I don’t like confict...but my job up on the hill has really bolstered my ongoing resolution to overcome this.

What makes you happy? I really like making people feel good about themselves, even if it’s just for a moment in passing.

If you were granted three wishes from an angel or genie, what would they be? To invent a cheap household appliance to extract fuel-grade hydrogen from waste water.  To make terrorism weapons suddenly acquire the density of a white dwarf star.  Down to the core of the earth they go!  To instantly raise every human’s I.Q. by 15 points. Some people could probably use 20.

If you could have one super power what would it be? Perpetual time travel, as a silent, invisible observer.

If you could travel back in time and meet yourself as a 10 year old kid, what advice would you give yourself? “Practice, practice, practice. And practice the hard stuff, not the easy stuff.  And next time you’re tempted to climb really high on a really old rope... WALK AWAY!”

Words to live by? For years, my personal motto has been the Three L’s: “to Learn, to Love, and to Leave a Legacy”.
