August 29, 1931- February 21, 2010
Dr. G. S. Lowen Wilson MB, Bch, BAO, MRCS, LRCP passed away peacefully at his home in Redwood Meadows on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the age of 78 years. Besides Bertha, his loving wife of fifty years, Lowen is fondly remembered by his son Alastair Wilson (Lori), his daughter Fiona (Grant Readman) and his grandchildren Alyssa, Sydney, Malcolm and Trevor; and by his faithful friend, Nicco the dachshund. Lowen is also survived by his brothers Trevor (Sally) and James and their families in Northern Ireland; and his sister Rosemary in London, England. Lowen was born in Portadown, Northern Ireland on August 29, 1931. He attended Coleraine Academical Institute and later obtained his primary medical degree at Queens University and also qualified at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in London. He worked for one year in Newtownards Hospital and at the Quoyle Hospital in Downpatrick. He married Bertha in 1960 and moved to Lisburn to enter Family Practice. Later he moved to Belfast and subsequently immigrated to Canada in 1966. He was a Physician in Drumheller for twenty-four years before opening his practice in Calgary at Springhill Medical Clinic.  Lowen served his community in a number of roles: as a school trustee in Drumheller, as a member of the Senate of the University of Calgary, and as a trustee, first of Knox United Church in Drumheller and later of Red Deer Lake United Church. He was also deeply involved in the Banff Men’s Conference of the United Church and was a life long member of the Symbol Masonic Lodge in Drumheller.  Since moving to the Bragg Creek area over twenty years ago Lowen delighted in the beautiful natural surroundings of forests, rivers and mountains; and in the wild life that visited his property. Yet he never ceased to miss the landscapes and seascapes of Ireland. He loved the water and loved sailing holidays, especially in the British Virgin Islands.  Lowen took enormous pride in the accomplishments of his family and especially his grandchildren, but above all he treasured his loving relationship with his wife Bertha. He was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by all his family. A Celebration of Lowen’s Life will be held at Red Deer Lake United Church (West on Highway #22x past Spruce Meadows) on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. You may forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.  If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Calgary Prostate Cancer Foundation at Suite 100, 1011 Glenmore Trail SW Calgary, AB T2V 4R6 Tel: (403) 212-8070 Fax:(403)212-8077 Email: info@prostatecancercentre.ca. Lowen’s family would like to thank Dr. Ruether and nurses at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic, Dr. Mark Joyce, family physician, and the staff of Cochrane Home Care for the care given to Lowen over the last weeks of his life. In living memory of Lowen Wilson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W.  Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

July 23, 1908
- February 9, 2010

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Caroline Giles, on February 8, 2010 at Vermillion Health Centre. She was 101 years old. Mom passed away peacefully after a short stay at the hospital. She was born in Germany on July 23, 1908. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1911 and homesteaded near Bateman, SK. In about 1930, Mom left Bateman and moved to Marwayne, AB, where she worked at the hotel and later as housekeeper for Dad, William Giles. Soon after, they got married and had four children. William and Caroline farmed near Marwayne until they sold the farm in 1954, then moved to town. Mom lived in Marwayne until 1997 with a short interruption of a year and a half, when she moved to Drumheller to be near her eldest son. She moved to the Vermillion Valley Lodge in 1997 and lived there until the last week of her life. Mom loved cooking, baking, gardening, reading and singing in her church choir. Caroline was predeceased by her husband William, her daughter Donna, her parents Adam and Susan Miller, her brothers Jack and Phillip and her sisters Katherine, Phyllis, Minnie and Mary. She is survived by her three sons: William (Adrine) of Drumheller, Elden (Karen) of Qualicum Beach, BC and Wayne (Caroline) of Calgary, her four grandchildren: Brenda (Brad) Zornes of Qualicum Beach, Barb Giles (Trevor Pile) of Qualicum Beach, Roberta (John) Rudin of Calgary and Ryan (Jennifer) Giles of Calgary and her eight great-grandchildren: Blayne, Troy and Taylor Zornes, Karin Skapski and Cameron Giles, Makenna and Carter Rudin and Caleb Giles. The family wishes to thank the staff at Vermillion Valley Lodge and Vermillion Health Centre for their excellent care of our mom. We also thank all those who were so friendly and kind to Mom over the years. There will not be a funeral service at this time, but a Graveside Memorial Service at a later date in Calgary. Memorial tributes may be made to Knox United Church, Drumheller, or a charity of your choice. Lakeland Funeral Home, Vermillion is in care of arrangements. Phone (780) 853-5100.    7p
