Aquaplex opens Friday

The Indoor Pool and aquatic area at the Drumheller Aquaplex will reopen on Friday, February 23, 2024, following an extended closure due to facility repairs and unforeseen construction delays.
In the summer of 2023, following routine annual maintenance, the Aquaplex staff identified a leak in the mechanical pit of the Aquaplex. During this time, the Indoor Pool area was closed to the public, though the hot tub remained open until mid-August, and the steam room remained open until the Outdoor Pool closed for the season in September. To accommodate patrons and compensate for the pool time, the Outdoor Pool was extended into the early fall season, until the weather no longer cooperated.
During the pool closure, several efficiency and safety upgrades to the Indoor Pool were also completed to continue the operation in a safer aquatic environment. The construction also resulted in extensive upgrades to enhance the overall swimming experience for all Aquaplex users, while extending the overall life expectancy of the facility and allow for more streamlined operations and preventive maintenance. With the completion of all repairs and necessary modifications, regular pool operations can begin, and patrons can be welcomed back through the Drumheller Aquaplex’s doors.
The Drumheller Aquaplex Indoor Pool will be commencing regular scheduled swimming again, with public swim, lane swim, Aquafit and swimming lessons returning on Friday, February 23, 2024. At this time, some additional repairs to the hot tub are being completed and, though it is undetermined whether it will be repaired in time for the opening weekend, the Town of Drumheller teams are hard at work to ensure that it will be available as soon as possible.
The Aquaplex will reopen with a Thrifty Swim ($2.00 per person and previously known as Toonie Swim) from 1:00pm until 4:00pm on Friday, February 23, 2024. For more information and updates about this opening weekend, please visit drumheller.ca.

Morrin ATB agency endures at new location

Service to Starland and the Morrin Area by the Alberta Treasury Branch (ATB) will continue in the community in a new space.
The Mail reported in November of last year that ATB was searching for a new banking provider in Morrin. For years ATB operated out of the Starland County office, however ATB informed Starland it would not be renewing its contract and posted on its social media it could be looking for a new contractor.
Sharpes Trucking, which operates on Main Street in Morrin has secured a contract with ATB. Jessica Shapre says they are transitioning the operations from Starland County.
“I, along with a few other employees, will be operating out of our building where we offer our bookkeeping services, Sharpe’s Trucking, and Pioneer Seeds,” she explains. “It is the old Western Financial building.”
“It is good opportunity that has come our way and it has been really good, the community is fantastic and supportive,” she said.
Sharpe explains the community is vibrant with a brand new school, thriving businesses, an arena that is busy with hockey and skating programs as well as the 4H. They are also in the heart of a vibrant farming community.
“I think it is a benefit and added service that I think we need,” she said.
Sharpe has a background in banking and is looking forward to the new opportunity. She worked at the credit union for nine years.
The new branch will be opening on March 5, offering continuity of service in the community.

Carbon searching for new CAO

Carbon Logo It appears the Village of Carbon is set to search for a new CAO.
According to minutes from the February 2 Special Council Meeting, the Carbon Village Council exited a closed session and Councillor Marie Kooiman moved the Village of Carbon Council revoke the appointment of Vanessa Van der Meer as CAO, Chief Administrator of the Village of Carbon immediately. The motion was carried.
A second motion from Councillor Trina Anderson removed Van de Meer from all signing authority for the village.
This comes as there has been a big change in the Village, with three new councillors elected in a by-election in September of last year.
Prior to this, there has been pressure from residents in the community to make a change. In January 2022, some residents signed on to a petition to remove the Carbon CAO.
So far there has been no posting for the position.
