HUNTER, Shirley Mae

December 27, 1941 - October 12, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley M. Hunter on October 12, 2016 at Drumheller Health Centre with her family by her side. Shirley was born on December 27th, 1941 to Mel and Olga Wilson from the Handhills area. Shirley was one of five children and grew up on a farm with plenty of chores. At age 15, Shirley left, with her sister Rita, to study hairdressing at Jacobson Beauty Institute in Calgary, where she became a certified hairdresser. In the 1980’s, Shirley opened her own Granitize franchise on Highway 9 in Drumheller. She met her husband to be, Ron Hunter, for the first time when he worked on her father’s farm. They married on May 15th, 1959 and over the next fours years she had four boys soon followed a little later by another boy and girl. Shirley and Ron chose to raise their six busy children in Nacmine rather than the big city of Drumheller, where Shirley kept even busier doing ladies hair from her kitchen at their home in Nacmine, when she wasn’t supervising the kids in their large market garden. Over the years, Shirley was the woman behind her husband Ron’s career at the Tire Shop, then after his retirement, Shirley and Ron ran R&S Memorials together. Like Dad, Mom was proud to be part of the Nacmine community and was very involved in the Community Association for many years. Shirley was predeceased in 2014 by her husband Ronald C. Hunter and by her parents Melvin and Olga Wilson and leaves to mourn her sisters Rita Gallinger (Ralph) and Lila Pensom, and brothers Ron (Lynne) and Ken Wilson (Thelma) and their 11 children. Shirley was devoted to her 6 children and 8 grandchildren and leaves to mourn: Jordan (Michelle, Colby Dylan), Darcy (Marcy, Matthew [Jenna], Jeffrey [Krystina], Collin [Shirley]), Jim (Paul), Darwin, (daughters Delaney, Finley), Kyle (Andrea, Rowan) and Twyla (Dave, Kobe, McKenna). A private graveside service will be held Saturday. The family invites Shirley Hunter’s friends and family to the Nacmine Community Hall on Saturday, October 15th at 12:00 pm to share stories and memories of Shirley along with a light lunch. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Shirley to the Canadian Cancer Society, www.cancer.ca or the charity of your choice. Courtney Winter’s Funeral Home are in care of the arrangements.
