On October 12, 2015 at approximately 11:54 PM, Stettler RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the industrial area of Stettler.  Members located a black Ford truck in the area of one of the local businesses. The truck was later determined to be stolen.  The first member on scene activated their emergency equipment on their police vehicle. The truck proceeded to accelerate past the first fully marked police vehicle.  A second police vehicle was also at the location.  The driver of the truck accelerated, changed direction and drove directly at the second police vehicle, ramming the front right corner causing extensive damage to the police vehicle. After disabling the police vehicle, the truck continued to accelerate, pushing the police vehicle approximately 3 metres after the initial impact. The RCMP officer in the rammed police vehicle was transported to the local hospital via ambulance for precautionary purposes.  The officer has since been released with minor injuries.

The three occupants in the stolen truck were apprehended at the scene and taken into custody without further incident.

Truck passenger, Christopher Victor WEICH, age 28, of Trochu, AB has been charged with possession of stolen property. Truck passenger Brady SHIVAK, age 33, of Vancouver Island B.C. has been charged with  possession of stolen property x 2 and possession of crystal meth. Both of the accused are set to appear in Stettler Provincial Court on November 12, 2015.

The investigation into this incident continues, with charges pending against the 20 year-old male driver of the truck who is scheduled to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court Wednesday, October 14, @014.

Filling your child’s bucket one star at a time. That is what the Drumheller and area Early Childhood Development Coalition (DECDC) Early Years Fair on Thursday, October 15 will be all about.

The event, which will take place at the Badlands Community Facility from 2 to 7 p.m., is an opportunity for families with children from 0-5 years to learn about the services in Drumheller and area.

Shauna Watson, co-ordinator for the DECDC, said the fourth annual event will feature 21 exhibitors that parents can speak to and get information about what they offer.

“The event is about families coming together to celebrate the importance and all the wonderfulness of the early years for a child as they are learning and growing,” she said.

“We ask families to come and join us for information, tips, and activities to help their child get a head start in life. This event is a great way for families who have children 0-5 to meet and connect with the resources in the community,” she told inSide Drumheller, continuing by saying older siblings are welcome to attend with their family.

Watson said the fair will feature a play area set up in the middle of the room for children to participate in, “hands on, age appropriate fun activities.”

The event will feature a parent passport, Watson said, that allows parents to visit each exhibitor and get a star for their passport to fill their child’s bucket with information to help them grow.

Watson said last year’s event saw 52 families attend, eight of which were walk-ins. She explained that if those looking to attend have not had an opportunity to pre-register prior to the event, they are welcomed as walk-ins that day.
