MALTIN, Laverna (Sis)
December 22, 1920 - April 16, 2011

Sis, as she was known to all who knew her, passed away peacefully at the Drumheller Regional Health Centre Saturday evening. She was predeceased by husband Sam in 1976, and leaves behind two sons, Ron of Drumheller and Gary of Terrace, B.C. Sis was a true Drumheller valley girl having accomplished her schooling in both Drumheller and East Coulee. Through the 1920s and 30s, her sporting and athletic interests kept her busy in softball, basketball and gymnastics. Also during those years she took to competitive 5-pin bowling, through which she was on a number of provincial championship teams and gained a Canadian Championship medal in 1963. That love for the sport served her well in the family business of operating Drumheller’s Apollo Lanes Bowling Alley with husband Sam from 1970 until 1977. Sis was always regaling stories of the hay days of the mining community in the valley and how the youth of the day viewed their worlds. Having husband Sam return from war service to purchase the Valley Trading Company based in Rosedale, Sis blended her accounting and business training to assist in the general store’s operation. Many dear friendships were forged with longtime Drumheller valley families. Her last wishes were for a small family service and that donations in her name would be to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation. Ron and Gary would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Olfert and the acute care unit, staff at the Sunshine Lodge, and Drumheller EMT for making her last days tranquil.
