GRIDLEY, Halley John
1942 - 2011


Mr. Halley John Gridley of Big Valley, Alberta passed away suddenly on January  29, 2011 at the age of 68 years.  Halley was born in Big Valley on February 17, 1942 to Raymond and Frieda Gridley and was the second born of seven children.  He attended Greenridge School, Big Valley School then U of A and U of C where he obtained his Bachelor of Education.  On September 10, 1966, he married Marie Bertwell and they had two sons.  Halley taught school in Botha, was the Principal in Byemoor and finished his teaching career in Donalda being “paroled” after twenty-five years of teaching.  Halley was truly a farmer at heart.  He worked with his dad and brother Arnold, then  later farmed the Gridley homestead part time and finally he farmed full time with his boys starting in 1993.  He also drove school bus, drove gravel truck and the Greyhound Bus.  He hauled concrete for Burnco and worked for Jack Webster on the farm.  Halley loved his family, farming, friends and Old Time dancing.  Halley is survived by his loving wife Marie, sons Randy (Melanie) and Marty (Alenda), grandchildren Kennady, Kyra, Karson, Kyle, Charlese, Sam and Gillian.  Brothers Arnold (Carol) and Ted, sisters Marilyn (Al) Stewart-Irvine, Joy (Dale) Kobi, Ivy (Don) Mewha and Laura Hood.  Brothers and sisters-in-law George Bertwell, Bob (Linda) McCullum, Brenda (Ray) Pare, nieces and nephews Kevin Kobi, Janine Kobi (Bryan), Darren (Shannon) Mewha, Adam Mewha (Julie), Arlene Stewart-Irvine, Alana and Natalie Hood, Karla (Darrel) Barker, Charmaine Pare` (Kurtis), Warren Gridley, Melodie (Clayton) De long, Warren and Megan De long and great-nephew Carter Mewha, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  Halley was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Frieda Gridley, brother Ranald in WW II, nephew Doug and sister-in-law Jackie.  Funeral services were held at the Stettler Community Hall on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. Susan Bowyer of the Big Valley United Church officiating.  As an expression of sympathy, and in loving memory of Halley, memorial contributions may be made to the Big Valley Fire Department, S.T.A.R.S Air Ambulance or to the Drumheller Heart To Heart Society in care of Brennen Funeral Home and Cremation Services P.O.
