There is a new bright star shining in our heavens.  It is with profound sorrow that the family of Richard (Dick) Thomson announces his passing.  Dick lost his courageous 3 year battle with cancer on September 17, 2012.  He was born in Ottawa, Ontario on January 29, 1957.  He graduated from Drumheller Composite High School in 1975 and continued his education graduating as a Heavy Duty Mechanic from Olds College in 1978.  He started as a Heavy Duty Mechanic with EO Parry’s in Drumheller.  Dick married Sandy Sept on May 13, 1978.  In September 1981, Dick started his 31 year career with the Olds College where he was an instructor, coordinator and chair of Ag Mechanics Faculty and finally the Director of Continuing Education.  He enjoyed playing and coaching hockey, baseball and loved waterskiing, camping, house boating and downhill skiing.  Dick spent time in the Shuswap and the west coast where he and Sandy together with siblings and cousins, rented a floating cabin on Powell River.  During trips to British Columbia, Dick and Sandy loved to take in wine tours and enjoyed anything related to water.  Above all, Dick always cherished spending time with close friends and family.  He was also actively involved in volunteering for many years with the Olds College and Olds Minor Hockey.  Dick leaves to mourn his wife and soul mate of 34 years, Sandy; sons Ryan (Ruth) and Stephen (Shannon).  On September 26, 2011 Ryan and Ruth presented Dick and Sandy with their first grandson, Merrick whose smiles with Grandpa will always be remembered.  In addition, he leaves behind his mother Patricia Thomson; 2 sisters Bonnie (David) Waddell, Rosemary (Clair) Cowles; brother Chris Kuzmanovich; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles as well as the many members of the Sept family;  He was predeceased by his father Thomas Thomson (Kuzmanovich), his maternal and paternal grandparents; one aunt and one uncle.  A Celebration of Life was held on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Olds College Alumni Centre with Warren Smith officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Richard Thomson Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Olds College, 4500 50 St. Olds, AB  T4H 1R6 ATTN:  Advancement.
