Two charged in smash and grab

On Thursday February 12th, 2015, just after 4:00 am, Drumheller RCMP responded to a commercial alarm at the Liquor Depot on Grove Place.  
    The front window had been smashed and a small amount of liquor had been stolen.  Police tracked suspects to a residence several blocks away.
    An 18 year old male from Drumheller has been charged with:
- Break, enter, and theft; and,
- Obstructing a Peace Officer.
    A 17 year old male from Drumheller has been charged with:
- Break, Enter, and Theft;
- Obstructing a Peace Officer;
- Failing to Comply with an Undertaking; and,
- Being disguised with intent to commit an offence.
    Both individuals were released from police custody and will be appearing in court in Drumheller on March 13th.
    Names of the accused will not be released to protect the identification of the involved youth.


Kallay to be inducted in the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame

    A Drumheller man who has dedicated years to the development of hockey in the province is being inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame.
    On Tuesday morning, February 24, Hockey Alberta and the Hockey Alberta Foundation announced their Hall of Fame Class of 2015. It includes George Kallay in the Builder Category.
    “This is a special time of year for the AHHF Selection Committee – we have the opportunity to look over and remember the significant contributions to our sport in Alberta, Canada and beyond,” said Bob Clark, Chairman of the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee. “It’s our honour to recognize these inductees. Their legacies and accomplishments can now take their place in Alberta’s hockey history.”
    Kallay is humbled by the award.
    "What makes me proud is all the kids who benefitted from my service."
    Kallay’s involvement in hockey spans more than two decades, and throughout that time he has been dedicated to player development in every role from player and parent to official from the minor hockey level all the way up to an executive member of Hockey Alberta, The Hockey Alberta Foundation and Hockey Canada.
    He served as chair of the Hockey Alberta Foundation from 2005-2009 and the chair of the Hockey Canada Development Committee from 2005-2008.
    For his work he was presented with the Hockey Alberta Development Award in 2005, the Hockey Alberta Centennial Award in 2007, the Hockey Alberta Volunteer of the Year in 2008 and the Alberta Cup 25th Anniversary Builders Award in 2011.
 Kallay will be inducted this year at a ceremony in Canmore on July 25. Others to be induced this year include Hand Hills Lanny McDonald and the 1979-1980 Red Deer Rustlers.

Pump troubles close Aquaplex

Drumheller's Aquaplex is closed as of Tuesday morning, February 24. A statement from the Town of Drumheller states that a malfunctioning pump motor at the Drumheller Aquaplex is the cause of the problem, temporarily closing the building. Town spokesman Cody Glydon said staff are working to resolve the issue and get the building reopened as quickly as possible, and appreciate the patience of the public while the crew performs the necessary repairs.
