Atlas Coal Mine presents Christmas at Fanny’s

Fannys

At 6:30, on December 5, 2015, the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site is proud to present the fundraising event Christmas at Fanny’s. “This is a riotous evening of entertainment, set at one of Drumheller’s famous brothels during the prohibition years,” says Kelly Eddy, Director of Shenanigans & Goings-On at the Atlas Coal Mine. Held at the East Coulee School Museum, the event recreates a respectable function to which both men and women are involved. “A big dinner, old time music, games of chance, and a stage show will certainly recreate Drumheller’s naughty era,” adds Eddy. “Guests will mingle with historic characters, and are encouraged to dress up for this event in their favorite retro finery.” Christmas at Fanny’s is an engaging fund-raiser for Canada’s last wooden tipple. “Where else can you get tippled for the Tipple?” quips Eddy.
Fanny Ramsley, one of western Canada’s most famous madams, operated in the Drumheller Valley from 1917 to the 1950’s. Although dozens of brothels worked the Valley, Fanny operated one of the most popular in the district. Gambling, drinking, dancing, and excellent food were all great reasons to come and enjoy a night at Fanny’s. Even respectable groups like the Drumheller Board of Trade, Rotary Club, and Town Council held their annual dinners at Fanny’s as she had the best food and entertainment in the valley.

Constable Jonathan Foran impressed with welcome

RCMP Const. Theron

Drumheller welcomes RCMP Constable Jonathan Foran to the community. Foran says he has been receiving a lot of welcomes everywhere he goes.
Joining the RCMP was a family thing, as his father is a retired RCMP member, along with a couple of uncles.
Graduating from the RCMP Depot in Regina in September 2012, Foran’s first posting was in High Level, Alberta. Drumheller is his second posting.
He moved here in October but has managed to get out and see the town and the surrounding communities. He has already been to the Suspension Bridge, which reminds him of home, in Sussex, New Brunswick. High on the list to see next is the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Though not competitive in sports, his favorite hockey team is the Montreal Canadians.
He explains property crimes, break and enters to vehicles and homes, are some of the biggest concerns for the Drumheller RCMP. This November is all about pedestrian safety, and Foran confirmed that  failing to yield to pedestrians is set at a $700 fine and four demerits.
Foran hasn’t found out yet, which activities he will be participating in, as he is still learning what they (RCMP) do here.
He is currently  working on updating the school safe programs.

Madison Colberg attends Malta Commonwealth Youth Forum

Drumheller’s Madison Colberg is once again sharing her talents on an international stage, attending the Commonwealth Youth Forum next week in Malta.
The Youth Commonwealth Forum is hosted by the Government of Malta in partnership with the Commonwealth Youth Council and the Commonwealth Secretariat.  According to its website, it "brings together youth leaders from across the Commonwealth to exchange ideas and share experiences, build skills and networks, identify the most vital challenges and opportunities facing young people today, and make recommendations to decision makers at the highest level."
The Forum also helps sets the agenda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, coming just a week later.
“They choose 400 people, ages 18 to 30 from all of the Commonwealth nations. We attend a week-long forum with the theme ‘Adding Global Value,’” she explains.
While Colberg has been in the spotlight for her participation in the Miss Universe Canada, along with a trip to Nicaragua with Operation Smile, it was her work in school, which helped secure this opportunity.
“I have been involved with the Duke of Edinburgh with my awards, and I just came across the Youth Forum on the Internet and social media,” she said.
It was a long process of application and accreditation before she was accepted. Colberg sees it as a great opportunity. There are only two youth from Canada attending.
“I’m excited, It is a really good opportunity to learn about other nations, interact with other cultures and promote Canada,” she said.
They will be discussing all kinds of topics and issues from volunteerism to the environment, she finds them all interesting.
“It is very different, and I have never done anything like it, but it does sound interesting,” she said.
Colberg is currently studying business, majoring in marketing, with a minor in entrepreneurship and is interested in corporate law, as well as going into business.
“International work has always intrigued me, and I think each thing I have been doing, even though they are different, are going to come together and is helping me grow differently."
The Commonwealth Youth Forum is November 21-25.
