Muskrat makes downtown appearance

muskrat

Drumheller had an extra Christmas visitor the morning of December 20.

After arriving at Campus Alberta Central for work, Shelley Boyer and Leah Joynt spotted the creature outside the window.

"It was a very exciting morning," Boyer said, "I was just looking out the window and said ‘there's a rat!’ We ran outside and took the video, chasing it down the street."

It wasn't long before video and became the topic of a discussion on Facebook. Many recognized him as a muskrat.

Boyer said, "He didn't really look like a rat. He had a very cute face and was kind of chubby."

Though the muskrat may be thought of as an unlikely shopper in our downtown core, muskrats are actually quite common in Alberta. They live near waterways such as the Red Deer River. Whether he was lost and could not find his way back to the river or just out for a stroll is to be decided but he sure did make for an exciting Christmas sighting.
