Young Drumhellerite meets curling legend

A young man from Drumheller got the chance to meet one of Canada’s most successful curlers recently, Olympic gold medalist Kevin Martin.

Chase Brown attended the Kevin Martin Junior Bonspiel for Western Canada on April 27 to 29 in Edmonton. His team placed second in the C event.

“The competition was intense and there are a lot of good curlers out there,” said Brown. “We were really pleased with our outcome!”

There were 80 teams from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The curlers ranged in age from 10 to 20 years old.

All of the teams were competing for $27,000 in prizes.

Brown curls out of the Garrison Curling Club in Calgary. He travels two to three times every week from October to April to practice and play games.

His team won first in the Bantam Division in Calgary and area for the 2011 to 2012 season. They also took home the bronze medals for the Southern Alberta Curling Championship.

Upon meeting Martin at the bonspiel two weekends ago, Brown said, “It was a real honour to meet Kevin Martin.”
