Big Sky champions

For football purists, a 64-0 tromping wasn’t the game they wished for, but for the senior Drumheller Titans it was the culmination of years of hard work, and a statement going into provincials.
The Titans charged their way to the Big Sky Conference Championship over Bow Valley of Canmore. The Titans dominated from beginning to end.  A healthy crowd of supporters from the community cheered the team on every inch of the way.
“The guys played really well,” said head coach Ken Fournier. “Everybody played. We wanted to come out and work on everything we were running. At the start of the game we marched out, tried our new offence, and punched it in.”
The game continued in the same fashion. Fournier said it was good focus on the art of the players not to look beyond this match.
“You want to play hard until the end. They showed up ready to go,” said Fournier.
For Brandon Mullin, who has played Titans football for five years, he was proud of the success on the field.
“It was a big game,” said Mullin. “Two weeks to prepare for a team can be bad… but we stepped up, we were really fired up for the game and came out running and hit them hard in the first play and momentum kicked in.”
He applauds his teammates who have been in the trenches working towards this championship.
“It means everything, the championship of the Big Sky. A lot of us have been fighting for it for three years. It is a team sport. These Grade 12s have a lot of heart.”
The Titans were able to secure the championship with one of their key running backs out with an injury.  While the team is relatively healthy, a two week wait while the rest of the leagues battle for their respective championship will help to heal some of the bumps and bruises.
“We’ll be ready to go in two weeks,” said Fournier.
As playoffs continue, the Titans will continue to have home field advantage.
