Titans ready for home opener

The Senior Drumheller Titans had a great showing in their first outing this year against a strong Sylvan Lake team.

The Titans hosted the Lakers on Saturday at DVSS field in exhibition play. The Sylvan Lake team are a strong Tier 3 team, and it was a good test for the Drumheller team.

It was a tough first quarter as the Lakers jumped out in front, however as the game progressed the Titans were able to move the ball and make defensive stops. They were not able to turn the tides and lost 34-20.

“This was great, with only a week of practice,” said head coach Ken Fournier.

He was impressed with some of the youth that have joined the squad.

“Offensively our running backs are looking great, they moved the ball well. We have young rookies in there as well as guys that stepped up and are doing really well running it,” said Fournier.

Bright spots include Spencer Fournier, who is in his first year with the senior squad. He was able to carry one into the end zone. Dayl Poulsen also completed an 80-yard return for a touchdown.

On defence, he said they were “burned along the outer edge.” This is something he wants to tighten up,

“Games like this show you your mistakes and you just have to go back to work in improving,” he said.

Fournier said last Saturday’s game found the Titans a little short on the bench. A number of players were still on vacation, and a few key players are in the International program, and have yet to report.

“They’ll be here in a week or so, so they will be here for Olds,” said Fournier.

The season begins for the Senior Titans this Saturday when they host Olds at home. This will be their home opener at 2 p.m.

“We play them twice this season so it will be a battle. They will be a big physical team like they always are,” said Fournier.

Before they take to the field, the Bantams will be hosting Strathmore for their home opener as well. Game time is 11 a.m.
