Bats a hit

The Heritage Classic Memorial game held on July10 at Newcastle diamonds was a hit.
    So were the bats.

The game, which featured Drumheller baseball legends, brought out about 35 players. There were some strikes, some hits and some great defensive plays. The East-enders were the victorious team in the match.
After the game the players signed two wooden baseball bats donated by Easton and the Sports Room Source for Sports.  These bats were put on the block and were at the Sports Room Source for Sports where people could bid on them, or send in a bid to an email on www.drumhellerminng.com.
The auction closed on July 31. The winner of one bat was Don Tobal of Calgary, who purchased one for $120. An anonymous donor(s) simply called “Friends of Roger Berlando” purchased the second bat. They paid $150 and said the bat was to go to the former Drumheller pitcher who shined on the mound.
In total $270 was raised, which is to be directed to the Miners Memorial. To date, Linda Digby of the Mining Centennial committee said they have raised $20,840.
The bats were presented to the winners on Wednesday morning, but in a turn of events, Berlando thought the gift should keep on giving.
He donated the bat back to the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site and his wish is that they could use it again to help raise more funds.
This means someone else may get a crack at the bat.
