MACPHERSON
Allan Johnston

May 15, 1924 – Delia, Alberta
February 15, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Allan Johnston Macpherson passed away peacefully on February 15, 2018 at Wentworth Manor, Calgary, at the age of 93 years with his wife, Mildred, at his side. Allan was born May 15, 1924 on the family farm at Delia, AB to Edith and Robert (Bob) Macpherson where he was greeted by two older brothers, Don and Ken. He spent his childhood and much of his adult life farming alongside his brother Ken. He was educated in both Delia and Drumheller but started his schooling in the one-room school house a quarter of a mile up the road from home. Throughout his life, wherever he was, Allan was always proud to call Delia his home. Allan’s father was a director of the Alberta Wheat Pool (1924-1941) and Allan became interested in the idea of farm co-operatives at a young age. He became a local delegate in 1954, was elected to the Board of Directors in 1957 and by 1978 was the President. Although Allan had many achievements with the Pool over thirty-two years, his greatest was in meeting and marrying Mildred Shier in 1964. They had a wonderful life on the farm but, after retirement from the Pool and health issues began to develop, they eventually moved to Calgary permanently. In 1988, Allan was inducted into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame in recognition of his leadership and accomplishments in the grain industry. Allan will be remembered for his ready smile, his quick wit, his calm rational approach to issues and his steadfast love for his family. A kinder, more gracious gentleman would be hard to find. Allan is survived by his wife, Mildred; nieces, Margaret (John) Bertrand of Edmonton, Janet (John) Mitchell of Saanichton, BC, and Edith (Gerald) Printz of Gravelbourg, Sk.; nephews, Bill (Karen) Macpherson of Watervalley, AB, Bob (Sylvia) Macpherson of Cochrane, AB, Lloyd Shier (Colleen Wood) of Calgary and Wayne (Cynthia) Shier of London, ON. He also is survived by many grand and great-grand nephews and nieces. Allan was predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Kenneth and sister-in-law Margaret Macpherson as well as brother-in-law and sister-in-law Arthur and Cherrie Shier. A Celebration of Allan’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date in the family plot at Delia, AB. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice. Mildred and the family will always be grateful to the staff at Wentworth Manor for the excellent care and friendship shown to Allan. In living memory of Allan Macpherson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
