- February 9, 2010

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Caroline Giles, on February 8, 2010 at Vermillion Health Centre. She was 101 years old. Mom passed away peacefully after a short stay at the hospital. She was born in Germany on July 23, 1908. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1911 and homesteaded near Bateman, SK. In about 1930, Mom left Bateman and moved to Marwayne, AB, where she worked at the hotel and later as housekeeper for Dad, William Giles. Soon after, they got married and had four children. William and Caroline farmed near Marwayne until they sold the farm in 1954, then moved to town. Mom lived in Marwayne until 1997 with a short interruption of a year and a half, when she moved to Drumheller to be near her eldest son. She moved to the Vermillion Valley Lodge in 1997 and lived there until the last week of her life. Mom loved cooking, baking, gardening, reading and singing in her church choir. Caroline was predeceased by her husband William, her daughter Donna, her parents Adam and Susan Miller, her brothers Jack and Phillip and her sisters Katherine, Phyllis, Minnie and Mary. She is survived by her three sons: William (Adrine) of Drumheller, Elden (Karen) of Qualicum Beach, BC and Wayne (Caroline) of Calgary, her four grandchildren: Brenda (Brad) Zornes of Qualicum Beach, Barb Giles (Trevor Pile) of Qualicum Beach, Roberta (John) Rudin of Calgary and Ryan (Jennifer) Giles of Calgary and her eight great-grandchildren: Blayne, Troy and Taylor Zornes, Karin Skapski and Cameron Giles, Makenna and Carter Rudin and Caleb Giles. The family wishes to thank the staff at Vermillion Valley Lodge and Vermillion Health Centre for their excellent care of our mom. We also thank all those who were so friendly and kind to Mom over the years. There will not be a funeral service at this time, but a Graveside Memorial Service at a later date in Calgary. Memorial tributes may be made to Knox United Church, Drumheller, or a charity of your choice. Lakeland Funeral Home, Vermillion is in care of arrangements. Phone (780) 853-5100.    7p
