1919 – 2009


It is with sadness we announce the passing of Buddy Byers on October 1, 2009 in Vernon, British Columbia.  Buddy was born May 15, 1919 in Morrin, Alberta and spent many years in Alberta.  During WW II he served with the RCAF in England. In 1947 he married Ruth Clark. In Alberta, Buddy owned a coal delivery service and later from 1956 - 1965 he owned and operated the Milo Hotel in Milo. In Vernon, BC from 1965 - 1966 he owned Bud’s Spudnut Shop and Thompson’s Cleaning Service. Buddy and family returned to Calgary where he was employed by the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1994, back to BC, where they took up residence in Grand Forks and Buddy worked for Parta Industries until his retirement. To be close to family, he and Ruth moved to Cranbrook, BC, residing for nine years.  They returned to Vernon in 2003. Buddy was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion and enjoyed fishing, curling, playing crib, and was know  to his family as the “Yahtzee King”.  He will be forever loved and his memory will be held dear in the hearts of his wife, Ruth, to whom he was married for sixty-one years; daughter, Cheryl (Ken) Zimmerman, of Vernon, BC; sons: Craig (Coling) Byers of Richmond, BC, Gordon (Marilyn) Byers of Calgary, AB and Ken Byers of Kelowna, BC.  Further cherishing his memory are seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  Buddy is also survived by two sisters: Elizabeth (Betty) Barry of Penticton, BC and Vella McGechie of Drumheller, AB. He will be missed by his numerous nieces and nephews who enjoyed their Uncle Bud’s sense of humour and his many famous sayings. A public Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Morrin Cemetery with Harold Hunter officiating. Lunch to follow at the Morrin Community Hall.  In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make a memorial donation in Buddy’s memory to a charity of choice.
