June 23, 1931 - March 9, 2024

Jo passed away on March 9, 2024, in the Drumheller Health Centre after a very short stay at the age of 92 years.
Josephine (Jo) Lucille Smith was born in Winner, South Dakota, U.S.A. on June 23, 1931, to Joseph and Hazel Wempe.
She arrived in Canada when only a few months old. Her parents farmed in the Camrose, Alberta area, eventually settling near Kingman where Jo did most of her schooling. She ventured to Drumheller in December 1950 to find work. Here she met Charles Alexander Smith, working as his housekeeper caring for his two young children Shelley and Delbert. Charlie and Jo married July 4, 1952. To this union three more children were born Linda, Carol, and Donald. Most of their life was spent in the valley except when the family moved to Canmore from 66-81.
Jo enjoyed a variety of hobbies, but crocheting was a favourite, followed by the garden at the Sunshine Lodge, after she moved in there July 1, 2011.
Jo was predeceased by her husband, one daughter and three grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children; Delbert (Dale), Linda (Ernie), Carol, Donald (Bonnie), grandchildren, and numerous other family members.
As per Jo’s wishes there will not be any formal funeral service, if friends so desire memorial donations may be made to Sunshine Lodge Activities Fund, or the charity of one’s choice.
Jo’s family sends many thanks to the hospital staff and the Sunshine Lodge staff for their care.
