On Monday, April 10 we lost an outstanding husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa and friend when Aldred (Al) Leon Bremer passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Drumheller General Hospital at the age of 83 years. Al is lovingly survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor, three sons Laverne (Margie), Bob (Linda) and Allan (Tanis); three daughters Tracey (Garry), Patricia (Jim) and Ronna (John), 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, his sisters Loretta and Leslie, brother-in-law Richard and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Vera, his eldest grandson Justin, his brother Raymond, and sister-in-law Georgina. Al, or Tub as he was commonly known when he was growing up, lived and completed his schooling in Rowley and Drumheller before working various jobs in the area. In 1954 he signed up for the Royal Canadian Air Force and he and Eleanor moved to Vancouver where they lived with Eleanor’s grandparents before he was accepted into the service. In August 1955 he moved to Quebec for his training before being stationed in Barrie, Ontario. Eleanor joined him in November and on November 25 Al married the love of his life. In 1956 they moved to Bagotville, Quebec where they remained until 1958 when they moved with their two young sons back to Morrin. Over the next 10 years they welcomed four more children – three daughters and a son – to their family. During that time Al worked for E.O. Parry and then in 1961 he started what would become an almost 28 year career with the M.D. of Starland. He built roads across the M.D. of Starland earning the respect of all who worked, or had dealings, with him. Al was an avid sports enthusiast who curled, played ball, loved watching his boys play hockey and enjoyed his regular pool nights with his “Morrin Pool Shark” buddies. In September 2016 he won a gold medal playing snooker for Zone 2 in the Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games and followed it up with a bronze in the Provincial playdowns. He also enjoyed his bingo, playing cards and his many years farming on the family farm eight miles north of Morrin. His caramel making made him a legend in communities across Alberta where he was often called the caramel man. Al lived a good life but the true testament to the man he was – was the love he always had for his family. He was one of the strongest men we all knew and loved. Guiding us with a firm but strong hand his family always came first and he was fiercely protective of, and loyal to, his wife, children and grandchildren but also his friends. He was a role model, mentor and hero to many and will always remain in our hearts. A Celebration of Life will be held to honour the memory of Al on Saturday, May 20 at 2 p.m. in the Morrin Community Hall. The family wants to thank Dr. Kuschke, Barb Trumpour at the Drumheller Associated Physicians Clinic and the staff at the Drumheller General Hospital for their excellent care and compassion. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Lategan and the team at Clinic 1 at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary.
