HelenSchmidt

SCHMIDT, HELEN
January 20, 2017

Helen Schmidt passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 82 years of age. Helen was born in Islay, Alberta to
Idelore and Elsa Nelson and was one of five children. She met the love of her life Frank Schmidt, and they were married in 1954. Together, they settled in Drumheller in 1962, where they raised their family, and became active pillars of the community. Helen dedicated her life as a caregiver. While raising her own children, she also provided child care for several other families. As her children grew up and started leaving home, she rejoined the workforce at the Sears Catalogue Store where she worked for 15 years. She loved to cook and frequently provided her family and community associations with fresh baking and delicious meals. She also enjoyed sewing, reading and playing bridge and crib. Just recently she took great pride in scoring a hand of 29 while playing with her son. No matter how busy Helen was, she made time for others by volunteering with the Catholic Women’s League and the Hospital Auxiliary. Helen was admired for being as beautiful on the outside as she was on the inside, and her kind heart and caring soul was evident to everyone who knew her. Helen is survived by her seven children Susan (Robert) Mullen, David (Susan) Schmidt, Wane Schmidt, Bruce (Suzanne) Schmidt, Anna (Chris) Garez, Ronald (Dawnette) Schmidt, Raymond Schmidt, twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was also survived by her sister Anna (Robert) McCormack and two brothers Lee Nelson and Leslie (Marge) Nelson. She was predeceased by her loving husband Frank, her parents Idelore and Elsa Nelson and her brother Vernon Nelson. The Family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the staff and friends at the Drumheller Hillview Lodge and Drumheller Health Centre for their exceptional care and support through her difficult times. We would also like to thank all the relatives and friends for their love and support to our Mother. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at St Anthony’s Catholic Church. Interment will be attended by immediate family only. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.
