HATHAWAY, Mabel Violet (Mate)

March 21, 1930 - Drumheller, Alberta
February 26, 2015 - Drumheller, Alberta

It is with great sadness and loss that we announce the passing of this great lady at the age of almost 85 years. The world is a bit grayer now for us. Mate was dedicated to her family, friends, and her jobs. She always looked for and found the good in everyone, and made very good friends wherever she was. With no children of her own, Auntie Mate was always there for her four nieces and nephews, and later our growing families. She truly was our second Mom. If you needed something, or someone to listen to you, she would be the one. Mate worked hard at everything, she never seemed to tire. She outlived every job she ever had, she was there until the doors closed for the day or the company closed for good. She never quit, never gave in, never complained that the job was too hard. Employers: Valley Trading Company(Sam/Sis Maltin), Capital Grocery (Steve/Kay Korpecki retired in 1960), the Grocery was then taken over by (Lenny/Joyce Nelson), Gas Trunk Line, Drumheller Apollo Lanes Bowling Alley (Sam/Sis Maltin), Bottle Depot (Gordon Hillman), Jim’s Greenhouse (Jim/Darlene Macintyre) , Sun Valley Farm (Jim/Rhona Goudy). Mate was lots of fun to be around. She loved to shop for the little ones and she always found special gifts for the rest of us as well, just a little something to remind us that we were all kids in her books. She enjoyed the holidays when we could all be together, especially with all the kids. Christmas cookie baking time
started about five weeks ahead of Christmas. Mate made a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner followed by trifle like no one else can make. She made the best cup of tea. Mate loved animals, long walks, mowing grass, picking berries, and listening to old time country music. Thanks Mate for the laughs and the wonderful memories. Mate is lovingly remembered by her sister, Mildred Morse. Nieces & Nephews: Barbara (John) Gallagher, Dale (Gwen) Morse, Penny Holmen (Ray), Dana (Kathy) Morse. Great Nieces & Nephews: Sean (Heather) Gallagher, Jason (Rachelle) Morse, Travis (Tracy) Morse, Kim Mulgrew, Kevin Morse(Mandy), Jon Holmen, Jesse Morse, Megan Morse. Great-great Nieces & Nephews: Evan & Avery Gallagher, Kayla & Daxton Mulgrew, Destiny & Hope Morse, Connor & Autumn Morse, Ariah Holmen. Mate was predeceased by her life mate Lawrence “Bull” Cunningham, three brothers Albert, William, and Edward Hathaway, great niece Shawna Lynn Holmen. A private family service was held at Courtney-Winters Funeral Home. Our sincere thanks to Pastor Carlos Calderon. Our family would like to express sincere gratitude and appreciation for the compassionate care given to Mate by Dr. D.N. Maseka, the nurses, staff and volunteers of the Drumheller Health Centre Continuing Care unit (Homestead Lane). Donations can be made to the Drumheller and Area Health Foundation - 351 9th Street N.
