SPROULE John Alvin (Jack)

SPROULE, John Alvin (Jack)
March 21, 1934 - March 7, 2014

It is with sadness that the family of John Alvin (Jack) Sproule announces his passing on March 7, 2014 at the Drumheller Regional Hospital. He will be greatly missed by his wife Moira, of Hussar and family, Scott (Olivia) of Lyalta, and their son Wilson, Gary (Judy) of Hussar, their sons, Jared (Kelsey), Kirk, and Quinn.  Jack is also survived by his brother, Winston (Carrie) Sproule of Strathmore, sister-in-law, Selma Sproule of Edmonton, sister-in-law Helen Watson of Dundee, Scotland, as well as many nieces and nephews.  Jack was predeceased by infant son Cameron, his parents, his brothers, Robert, Cecil, Neville, Fred, and infant brother Garfield. Jack was born to parents George and Olive Sproule at Bassano Hospital and lived on the family farm at Chancellor attending numerous one room schoolhouses in the area.  His parents moved to Bowness in 1948 and he went to high school at Mount Royal College, and after his graduation he attended Olds Agricultural School.  Jack liked to rodeo in his younger days and rode saddle bronc on the circuit and participated in the Calgary Stampede.  For several years he worked in Calgary at Kenway Saddle Company and Tom Campbell’s Men’s Wear during the winters and returned to his Chancellor farm in the spring. Jack and Moira (Scott) were married in Calgary on November 16, 1957.  Moira was from Brechin, Scotland and met Jack in Calgary while she was travelling with a friend across Canada.  In 1961, Jack and Moira bought their present farm in the Wintering Hills area and raised their sons, Scott and Gary on the farm. Besides his love of farming, Jack enjoyed many activities, including cattle penning, saddle making, playing and coaching fastball, 4-H leader, curling, coaching hockey and watching any of his grandson’s sporting events.  He was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church in Hussar and served on church council in many capacities over the years.  Jack has been in declining health and was being cared for at home, but he remained always pleasant and appreciative and enjoyed visits from family and friends. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his family as a devoted husband, dad, grandpa and for his generosity, patience and sense of humour. A Memorial  Service will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hussar at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday March 12, 2014, with pastor Dan Hendrickson officiating. A family graveside service will be held at Rockyview Garden Of Peace prior to the Memorial Service in Hussar. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the charity of donor’s choice. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.
