LARSON Martha

LARSON, Martha
October 27, 1920 - November 27, 2012

Martha Larson passed away peacefully on November 27, 2012 at the Drumheller Continuing Care Facility where she resided for nearly six years. Martha was born in Trochu on October 27, 1920 to Jacob and Mary Schneider. She attended school in Trochu and later went to work for the Jim Hays family of the Howell Lake area, near Huxley. It was there that she met and married Olaf (Olie) Nygard, recently from Norway, in 1939. Their son, Kenneth was born in 1941. Soon after, the family moved to Trochu where daughter, Betty Anne, was born in 1945. Olie passed away in 1961. Martha then became assistant matron at Golden Hills Lodge in Three Hills. It is here she met Arnold Larson and they were married July 6, 1963. After several moves, they built a house northeast of Carbon. In 1976 they moved to Three Hills where they enjoyed their retirement. In 2005 Martha and Arnold moved into The Golden Hills Lodge and then to Drumheller Continuing Care in 2007. Arnold passed away December 31, 2010. Martha was active in the Knox UCW, and Trochu and Three Hills Senior Drop Ins. She will be remembered for her baking, knitting, hardanger, quilting and her meticulous housekeeping. Martha made a cross stitch quilt for her daughter, daughter-in-law, and each of her grandchildren as well as Hardanger runners. Many friends will also remember good times playing canasta, picnics, and drives in the country. Martha is survived by her son, Ken (Dorothy) Nygard of Carbon and Betty Anne (John) Voytechek of Three Hills, four grandchildren: Joanne (Ken) Miller, Steven Nygard, Dean (Sandra) Huxley, Carrie (Todd) Vader, and four great-grandchildren: Paige and Conal Miller, Jennalee and Rieley Jensen. Martha was predeceased by brothers: Peter, Jack, John and Edwin Schneider and two infant sisters as well as Christine (Rudy) Gehring and Minnie (Sig) Meyers. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr.’s Nahornick and Olfert and the staff at Drumheller Continuing Care for the devoted, kind care they showed to both Mom and Dad. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Knox United Church or to a charity of your choice. Services entrusted to Kneehill Funeral Services Ltd., Three Hills. 403-443-5111.
