SOMMERVILLE (LLOYD), Meiriona (Iona)
June 4, 1925 - November 24, 2012
It is with tremendous sadness, we announce the death of Iona Sommerville. Iona passed away peacefully at the age of 87 at the Sundre Hospital, surrounded by her loving husband, nieces, nephews and extended family. Iona will be missed
by all her friends and family. Iona was born in Caerbryn, Wales to Henry and Margaretta Lloyd, the second youngest of six children. The family came to Canada in 1929, settling in the Stewart District of Peace River. Her brothers John, Leonard, Glyn and sisters Elunid and Olwen have pre-deceased her. Iona received all her schooling at the log school house at Stewart. In the early 1940’s the family moved to Victoria. On March 1, 1952 Iona married Mick Potter and lived in Morrin and Coleman. Mick passed away in 1984 while they were living
in Calgary. In 1990 she married Sandy Sommerville and moved to Sundre. Iona was fantastic at crafts, painting and knitting, winning several awards and ribbons. She also was a great cook and is famous for her fabulous desserts and always had time for a card game. Iona loved carpet bowling and she and Sandy made various trips to carpet bowling events. In 1998 Sandy and Iona were on the team that won the Canadian Gold Medal for the Seniors Carpet Bowling. Among
some of her memorable trips were cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska. Left to mourn are husband Sandy of 22 years, stepsons Wayne (Maureen), Bruce (Darlene) and Ian (Brenda) Sommerville, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service was held at the Sundre United Church on Thursday, November 29th at 1:00 PM. To
honor Iona, in lieu of fl owers, donations may be made to the Sundre
