McCULLY, John “Jack” Benson

McCULLY, John “Jack” Benson
December 16, 1918 - October 17, 2011

Jack was born at Craigmyle, AB on December 16, 1918 to Esther Benson McCully and Andrew Campbell McCully.  An only child, he spent his youth helping out on the family farm while attending Hillview School and Delia High School.  Continuing to farm, Jack also attended Olds Agricultural College and Alberta College in Edmonton.  During WWII he served with the RCAF, and in 1942 married E. Lillian Murray, also an Alberta College graduate.  They were posted to Quebec where son Douglas Maxwell was born in 1943.  After the war they returned home to Delia and farming, where son Robert Allan was born in 1947.  Jack and Lil bought Neil Beaton’s Hardware and operated it until 1973 before retiring.  The farmland was rented to friends John and Bob Sinclair and Jim Scott.  Jack played baseball and curled, but his real passion was for community service. He served on the United Church Board, Community Hall Board, and as a Sea Cadet and Air Cadet officer.  Jack was elected to the Hanna Hospital Board for over twenty years, during which time he became president of the Alberta Hospital Association.  A long time member of the Delia Chapters of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, he also served as Alberta Worthy Grand Patron of the Eastern Star. Jack was devastated by the loss of Lil in May 1985, but slowly recovered with the help of family and many good friends.  Later he remarried to Anne Ellerton (nee Beaton) who passed away in 2005. Jack is survived by sons Douglas (Anita) McCully, Allan (Lee) McCully, grandchildren Blake, Sean (Christine), John A., Joan, and Julia, and great-grandchildren Jenna and Caden McCully. A Memorial Service will be held at Delia United Church on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.  Following the service friends and relatives are invited to enjoy refreshments and a visit at the Delia Community Centre.  Forward condolences through www.hffs.com.
