The Town of Drumheller, Economic Development, and The Drumheller Housing Administration are happy to announce that the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation (CMHC) has approved Drumheller’s grant application for ten thousand dollars to assist in a needs assessment study of social housing in the community.

The Drumheller Housing Administration currently manages several subsidized rental units in the community and is eager to start on a new project. CMHC’s ten thousand dollar grant will be used for a needs assessment to determine where, in fact, the greatest need is in regards to social housing. Currently the Town of Drumheller is researching qualified social housing consultants to complete the needs assessment study.

Bob Sheddy, CAO of Drumheller Housing said "thanks to the Board of Directors for their vision on this project and CAO Ray Romanetz, Paul Salvatore and especially Economic Development officer Cody Glydon for securing this grant. Cody jumped in with both feet and secured the Grant which will be used for a Needs Assessment / Feasibility Study."

The identification of housing needs in Drumheller is a top priority in the Economic Development Strategic Plan put together by the Economic Development Task Force in 2014. The Town of Drumheller is eager to work with the Drumheller Housing Administration and a housing company to ensure this project moves forward for the betterment of our community.

Drumheller Housing Authority manages 50 subsidized townhouse- style units in Greentree and Hunts and 20 apartment style affordable rental units in Sandstone Manor.

Sheddy says,"If you have input on what you would like to see for future affordable rental properties email rent.drumheller@century21.ca or comment on the Drumheller Mail Facebook page under this story."

Drumheller girl donates hair to cancer for third time

A young Drumheller girl has decided to cut her hair for cancer, for the third time.

Emily Albright made the decision to first cut her hair for cancer when she was five and in Kindergarten. The second time she decided to do this she was eight and now she has decided to cut and donate it once again at age 10.

“It makes me feel good because I can share my gift of fast growing hair with some people who have hair loss. It also makes me feel good because I help people who do have Cancer,” Emily said.

Bold Efexx Hair Shop cut Emily’s hair the last two times she has donated, with Diosa Salon and Spa cutting it the first time, her mom Nanci said.

When she chose to have her hair cut in Kindergarten and Grade Two, she sent it to Angel Hair, but this time she is sending it to Pantene.

Emily did her own research as to where she could donate her hair, her mom said, and this one hit a bit closer to home for her.

“She has two great aunties that are fighting cancer and Pantene is geared more to women instead of children,” Nanci said.

She recalls when Emily was in Kindergarten and came home from school after an assembly where she had heard about it. “(She) said that she wanted to help kids that were sick and I didn’t totally understand what she meant... thinking she was talking about a cold or something like that but no she was talking about people that don’t have hair, so then I realized she was talking about Cancer, (and) she decided she wanted to help,” Nanci said.

Her mom told inSide Drumheller that Emily has always had lots of thick hair and when Cindy Poland, the hairstylist who cut Emily’s hair weighed it, it was 5.8 pounds that was taken off and will be donated.

“It is amazing how she is so selfless. She would do anything for anybody. In this day and age, you see this generation and sometimes it is kind of scary to see these people that will potentially be taking care of us some day, and to see Emily, her dad and I are just so proud that she is willing to give,” Nanci said.

She has cut 28 inches off in the five years she has donated her hair.
