Students have World of Choices

Jordan WEbber World of Choices

World of Choices Career Forum had  over 250 students in attendance from Youngstown, Delia, Hanna, Morrin, Three Hills and Drumheller, that  gathered to have candid conversations with local career mentors from different career backgrounds.
The forum was held on Wednesday, March 9, at the Badlands Community Facility (BCF) Keynote speakers were John Shoff from Reality Bytes and  Royal Bank Manager Trevor Young. There were 29 career sector mentors from different professions attending this forum. With so many choices out there, sometimes the best way to decide on a career path is to hear from the experts.
World of Choices gives students the opportunity to engage in candid conversation with local Career Mentors as they share exciting aspects of their work. Students were exposed to a variety of career possibilities and had the opportunity to learn about the education and qualifications necessary to achieve their goals. Junior Achievement Alberta has been educating the East Central Region’s youth about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and financial literacy for over 50 years. This was Junior Achievements second annual World of Choices career forum and they  were excited to present new careers this year such as tattoo artist, funeral director, interior design and solar energy.
Getting out of the classroom and having the opportunity to participate in candid conversations in a more relaxed, real world setting empowered the students to take a vested interest in their own futures. Participants left the event feeling better prepared to face the challenges of the modern working world.
The benefits of the World of Choices career forum will directly extend to the community at large and will help to develop our future business leaders.
This Word of Choices event gave students a unique opportunity to begin the sometimes-daunting task of choosing a career path.

Accredited Courses available at Campus Central Alberta

CAMPUS Central Ab

Campus Alberta Central’s (CAC) goal is for students, in the Drumheller area, to receive further education, for courses that are accredited and transferable to universities, while staying within their own community. CAC is a joint venture between Olds College and Red Deer College that provides post-secondary educational opportunities to communities throughout the central Alberta region.  Working with the Red Deer College, programs are available from Administration, Business, Communication to Management courses.  There will also be Early Learning Childcare and Unit Clerk Certificate programs. CAC also has a new program, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) starting in February 2017.  CAC works with Olds College and several of their courses, starting September 2016, are related to tourism and accommodation certificate programs.  They also have Agriculture/Heavy Equipment Technician, Land Analyst, Rural Finance & Entrepreneur and Veterinary Medical Receptionist Certificate programs. “For example, CAC partnered with Starland County, at the gravel pit, teaching heavy duty equipment usage and maintenance.  Courses are also done face-to-face and or through webinars.” said Drumheller Community Learning/CAC Site Manager Dana Davidson.
CAC has partnered with Drumheller Valley Secondary School,  the Health Care Aide Certificate program which is available to grade eleven students wanting to enter the health care field.
CAC has non-credit programs, through the Adult Learning Program.  Davidson has noticed that a lot more people are requiring their General Education Diploma (GED).  This diploma program allows students to receive further education at SAIT/NAIT or courses offered at CAC.
CAC, on Centre St., Drumheller, will be having an Open House on April 20, from 3:00pm till 7:00 pm.

Town’s priorities discussed with Infrastructure Minister Mason

Ray Terry

On March 8, Mayor Terry Yemen, CAO Ray Romanetz  and Councillor Jay Garbutt held discussions with the  Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Brian Mason, at the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton.
Mayor Yemen spoke with Minister about current funding on two projects,(improvement on existing dyking systems in East Midland, Newcastle and Central Drumheller areas) and additional mitigation for the east part of town.  Mayor Yemen questioned what this may look like and will it be an opportunity for buy-outs.
Mayor Yemen also discussed with the Minister about the government’s previous commitments. Town of Drumheller’s 2016 Strategic Business Plan states, “The projects are enhancements to existing infrastructure and others are proposed as agreed to with the Province back in 1985.  75% of the Province’s commitment at that time has been completed however there are outstanding areas particularly in Rosedale and Lehigh.  The  Town has approached the Province requesting that these projects be funded due to the past commitment. (Commitment identified as the need for a dyking system to be built through Drumheller after the Dickson Dam was constructed).”
Mayor Yemen talked about the project to deal with the ongoing odor coming from the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s sewer system.  This has been a problem since 1985. Permanent and acceptable  solutions are required and Mayor Yemen requested this project be a top priority with the province.
Mayor Yemen requested funding for a parking area on the south hill, by the Welcome to Drumheller sign and dinosaur structure.  This is where tourists often stop to take pictures. It needs to be safe for tourists getting in and out of their vehicles.  Traffic  also  needs to be able to enter and exit safely onto Highway 9 South.
