Dr. Eberth publishes geological guide to valley

Eberth Head Shot 2013

Dr. Dave Eberth, a geologist at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, has had an extensive career studying and making discoveries all over the world.
His latest book, however, comes from his own backyard.
In July of this year, Eberth published “Badlands of Drumheller –Eastern Area,” and it is proving to be popular. In fact, its first printing of 300 sold out at the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s gift shop in just two months.             A second printing is on its way to the shelves.
“It’s funny, Dennis Braman (palynology researcher at Tyrrell) and I used to joke years ago when we were starting out and running all over the place in America and Asia, said ‘there’s a lot of work to be done in Drumheller but we’ll leave that for our retirement,’” he chuckles.
He explains it is a project that he pondered doing in the late 1990’s. It is a 64-page roadside guide to the geology and history of the Drumheller Badlands covering the east area of the valley including Dorothy as well as to the Wintering Hills and Wayne.
“Drumheller preserves spectacular evidence for an ancient world that is vastly different than the one we inhabit today,” says Dr. Eberth. “This book encourages people to get out and explore that evidence themselves.”
The work encourages exploration and it also includes GPS navigation to help pinpoint the sites described. It features 25 geological sites.
“It has the GPS coordinates in it so people can go to very specific localities on their own,” he said. “That’s something I really wanted to share, rather than the arm-waving approach, this will take people directly to localities and allow them to appreciate it.”
The book is accessible for the casual explorers but is also engaging to those who want to dig deeper.
“The book goes down into detail but will come back out and be quite light and tell a couple of anecdotes, and then will go back into detail again. You can use the book to explore at the level you are most comfortable at,” he said.
Eberth adds he is planning a companion book, describing west and north of Drumheller that includes Horsethief and Horseshoe canyons, the recreation areas at Morrin and Tolman bridges, and Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park.

Collector items arriving for Radio Auction

Hockey memorabilia collectors will be closely watching the bidding on two much sought after items to be sold at the Rotary Radio Auction, October 11 and 12 on CFCW. Thanks to the assistance of player agent Ritch Winter, the Calgary Flames have forwarded authentic, game worn and autographed jerseys of Johnny Gaudreau and captain Mark Giordano. Game worn jerseys are a must for collectors and this year’s auction will feature the two top Flames players.
Rotarians are visiting with businesses for auction items. The auction offers a solid advertising and promotion opportunity for businesses. Items are listed in two editions of The Mail, promoted by club members during the auction on CFCW plus exposure on various websites. Already, the list of items going up for sale includes a 48 inch T.V. and tickets to the Flames versus Oilers hockey game.

Aquaplex modernization on schedule

Work is progressing well on the new indoor pool and the opening date is still planned for November 1st 2017.
“To minimize the impact of the pool closure we are keeping the outdoor pool open as long as possible. Closure will be determined by the weather; which is looking good over the next 10 days at least,” explained Paul Salvatore Director of Community Services, “we are currently managing to keep the water temperature at 83 degrees Fahrenheit which is a great temperature for swimming.”
Town of Drumheller will extend the length of Aquaplex memberships by the length of the closure. “We feel that it is important to make sure that our members are given fair value in recognition of the inconvenience that the closure of the indoor pool will cause regular users. We have always tried to minimize the impact on our users as we encourage an active and healthy lifestyle,” says Mayor Terry Yemen.
The Drumheller Aquaplex originally opened in 1975 and 42 years later, there have been various upgrades. The 2017 Modernization is by far the most extensive update of the facility.
The newly modernized Aquaplex will feature a gradual entry pool basin, new hot-tub and steam room in addition to fresh new floors and surfaces. These improvements will help to reduce maintenance costs in addition to improving the overall aquatics experience.
