Time capsule set for dedication

Drumheller has come together to tell its story in 2017 to another generation, 50 years from now.
To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, the Drumheller Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee, has spearheaded filling a time capsule. Inside, dozens of items were donated to tell the valley’s story.
On Tuesday, September 19, the capsule was filled and ready to be put away for five decades.
In all, 50 items were placed into the approximately one-meter-long tube, expertly wrapped by Image Crafter Signs.
“The Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee were looking for ways to celebrate Canada 150 and get the community involved. We thought a time capsule was something a bit different,” said Rhian Russell, chair of the Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee. “We got some fantastic items donated, and we're grateful to everybody who contributed.”
Many local organizations and institutions contributed. There was everything from new vehicle brochures to a worship schedule from the Knox United Church. The local scout troop donated a neck scarf, the Dragons donated a jersey, the Tyrrell included a package and the Atlas Coal Mine donated a coal miner’s pay tag.
There were other mementos from significant moments in the valley’s history including the agenda of the Drumheller Health Centre’s grand opening and photos from the Tour of Alberta bike race.
The Canada Day issue of The Drumheller Mail, along with the September 13 edition was also included.
Nothing says 2017 more than a fidget spinner.
“The time capsule will provide a snapshot of life here in Drumheller on Canada's 150th anniversary, so in 2067 somebody will open it up and hopefully enjoy exploring our little piece of history! It's neat because the project required people from all over the community to come together and contribute, and it'll also provide a connection between people in 2017 and 2067,” said Russell.
The time capsule will be dedicated on Saturday, September 30 during Art and Culture Days in Drumheller. To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, there will be a tree planting and then a ceremony for the time capsule at the Drumheller Cenotaph at 12:30 p.m.
“It was great seeing all the items going into the capsule and I couldn’t help but think who will be opening it, and what they will think of these items in 50 years,” added Darren Goldthorpe manager of Recreation Arts and Culture.

Crime Stoppers: Theft of branding irons

RCMP CREST COLOUR
Between September 25 and September 27, 2017 someone stole 3 branding irons from a seasonal display at the Tim Hortons in Hanna.  The branding irons are registered and each one is a capital letter (D, A, M).  The letters are approximately 6" tall and the shaft is approximately 36" long.

The branding irons have tremendous sentimental value to the family that owns them as they used to belong to a late family member.  They were temporarily loaned to Tim Hortons specifically for the seasonal display.

If anyone has information about this or any other crime they can call the Hanna RCMP Detachment. If you want to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), by internet at www.tipsubmit.com, or by SMS (check your local Crime Stoppers www.crimestoppers.ab.ca for instructions).

Outdoor pool closed for season

A mechanical failure has led to the closure of the DrumhellerIMG 5321 Aquaplex outdoor pool.

Earlier this week the outdoor pool's main water circulation pump failed and is need of immediate replacement. Staff from the Town have worked tirelessly to resolve this issue, however despite those efforts the necessary replacement and repairs will not be able to be completed in a timely fashion. As a result, the Town will be shutting down the outdoor pool for the season.

The Town will be preparing the outdoor pool for winter and shifting focus to the opening of the newly modernized indoor pool still planned for November 1st 2017.

Aquaplex Supervisor Andrea Leavitt said "It's been a great outdoor pool season and we were lucky that we had such great weather. Our attendance and usership was much higher than we expected earlier in the year."

Town of Drumheller will continue to extend the length of Aquaplex memberships by the length of the closure. "We feel that it is important to make sure that our members are given fair value in recognition of the inconvenience that the closure of the indoor pool will cause regular users. We have always tried to minimize the impact on our users as we encourage an active and healthy lifestyle," says Mayor Terry Yemen.

The newly modernized Aquaplex will feature a gradual entry pool basin, new hot-tub and steam room in addition to fresh new floors and surfaces. These improvements will help to reduce maintenance costs in addition to improving the overall aquatics experience.

The Town will be releasing more details on the status of the indoor pool as things continue to progress.
