Aquaplex opening delayed

IMG 5375

It will be another two weeks until the Aquaplex will be reopened to the public.
The Aquaplex modernization project continues to move forward, however recent challenges mean the opening of the new Aquaplex will be delayed. Originally slated for a November 1 opening, the new opening date will be November 16.
“The contractor has had to deal with a number of issues; primarily with fittings, and this has unfortunately put us behind schedule,” explained Darryl Drohomerski, “these failures have affected the whole schedule; as when one task is not completed on time it can impact on the bigger schedule”.
The Town of Drumheller will extend the length of Aquaplex memberships by the length of the closure. “We recognize the inconvenience that the closure of the indoor pool will cause regular users and want to apologize for the delay,” says Paul Salvatore, Director of Community Services.
The Drumheller Aquaplex originally opened in 1975 and 42 years later, there have been various upgrades. The 2017 Modernization is by far the most extensive update of the facility.
The newly modernized Aquaplex will feature a gradual entry pool basin, new hot-tub and steam room in addition to fresh new floors and surfaces. These improvements will help to reduce maintenance costs in addition to improving the overall aquatics experience.

The Drumheller Fire Department responded to a garbage truck fire on South Railway Avenue near Elgin Hill at about 10:45 this morning. It appears the load of a GFL compactor truck caught fire. The driver was able to dump the large pile of garbage onto the adjacent service road, which spared the truck and allowed the department to fight the fully engulfed blaze. Drumheller RCMP was on site to direct traffic around the incident.

Three generations haunt high school halls

There are two more Ewings gracing the halls of DVSS this year, continuing a long family tradition.
Former associate principal, and math and science teacher, Don Ewing, was at DVSS to visit his twin grand children who just began Grade 7.
Don, himself is an alumni of the original Drumheller High School. He graduated in 1967.  It didn’t take long for him to make his way back
however.
He studied engineering and then education. In 1973, he began teaching in the valley at Greentree School. At the time, it was a junior high school.          The very next year he moved up with the Grade 9 class to the high school.
A few years later his own son Ryan followed suit, attended DCHS and graduated in 1995.
Don’s tenure at the school went from 1974 to 2010 when he retired from teaching.
This year saw Don’s grandsons Brody and Duncan began Grade 7 at DVSS, continuing the family tradition.
